WHAT IS A SAMVATSARA
A Samvatsara, also called a Jovian year, is a cycle of
60 years, that depends on the mean position of
Bṛhaspati. This is based on “Mean position” of Bṛhaspati
and not his True motion. The method of finding this can
be Surya Siddhānta or other Siddhānta texts. Given here
is a quick method of finding it based on the position of
Sūrya at the moment for which the Samvatsara needs to
be found.

THE METHOD OF COMPUTATION
This method assumes that at the beginning of Kali Yuga, (– 3101), the mean
Bṛhaspati was in the beginning of Meṣa Rāśi. Hence, if we determine the number of
Solar year elapsed from the moment of Kali start, we can determine the number of
Jovian years elapsed, by applying a conversion factor. This should be added to 26
(precisely 25.990133 according to Sri Varāhamihira), as that was the Samvatsara
running then. The details of this can be found in the Siddhānta section of the book.
 Current year = Gregorian Year + Sūrya’s longitude /360. From January to the date of Meṣa Saṅkrānti,
Gregorian year = Gregorian year – 1. For other periods, one should take the year in progress. For instance,
for January 1, 2000, one should take the year as 1999 plus the Sūrya’s longitude converted to year and
decimals.
 Kali year = Current year + 3101
 Jovian year = Kali year * [3,794 / 3,750] + 25.990133
 Jovian Year = Remainder of (Jovian year / 60)
 Samvatsara Yuga = Quotient of (Jovian Year / 5) + 1

EXAMPLE 1
FIND THE SAMVATSARA IN 2000, APRIL 13,
ON THE MEṢA SAṄKRĀNTI DAY.
Sūrya’s longitude = Meṣa 00:00:00 = 00.00°
 Current year = 2000. This is a rounded number, as on the Meṣa Saṅkrānti day, Sūrya’s longitude is 0°.
Hence, we don’t need to add any decimals for Sūrya’s progress in the zodiac.
 Kali year = Current year + 3101 = 2000 + 3101 = 5101
 Jovian year = 5101* [3,794 / 3,750] + 25.990133 = 5186.84187
 Jovian Year = Remainder of (5186.84187/ 60) = 26.841867 = 27 Samvatsara in progress, of which
84.2% has already elapsed. 27th Samvatsara is Vijaya
Samvatsara Yuga = Quotient of (Jovian Year / 5) + 1 = (26.841867/5) + 1 = 5 +
1 = 6. So, 6th yuga is in progress.

EXAMPLE 2
FIND THE SAMVATSARA OF 2000, JANUARY 1
AT 06:00 LMT UJJAIN
Sūrya’s longitude = Dhanu 5:31:14.05 = 245.5206°
 Current year = 19991 + 245.5206 / 360 = 1999.682
 Kali year = Current year + 3101 = 1999.682 + 3101 = 5,100.682
 Jovian year = 5,100.682 * [3,794 / 3,750] + 26 = 5,186.53
 Jovian Year = Remainder of (5,186.53/ 60) = 26.53 = 27th Samvatsara in progress, of which
53%1% has already elapsed. The 27th Samvatsara is Vijaya.
Samvatsara Yuga = Quotient of (Jovian Year / 5) + 1 = (26.53 /5) + 1 = 5
+ 1 = 6. So, 6th yuga, is in progress.

1. Since, the date is after January 1, and before Mesha Sankranti, the Current year = Gregorian year - 1

RESULTS OF INDIVIDUAL YEARS

YEAR #1: PRABHAVA प्रभव
Horāratna.
Endowed with all paraphernalia (sarvavastūnāṁ), sons
and properties (putrasaṁpattireva), long-lived and
abundant pleasures (dīrcāyurbhogasampanna).
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Courageous (sāhasī), truthful (satyavādī), highly virtuous
and talented (sakalaguṇasametaḥ), proficient in astrology
or the science of time (kālavid), righteous (dharmaśālī).

YEAR #2. VIBHAVA ववभव
Horāratna.
enjoyer of various pleasures (utpannabhuktabhogi), dark
complexioned and reddish eyes (kṛṣṇaścāruṇalocanaḥ),
scholar (paṇḍito), honoured by the king (rājapūjya).
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Lustful (kāmī), pure (nirmalo), ever cheerful
(nityatuṣṭaḥ), endowed with prodigious wealth
(prabaladhanasameto), relatives, learning and fame
(bandhuvidyāyaśasvī).

YEAR #3. ŚUKLA शुक्ल
Horāratna.
Highly fortunate (subhaga), peace loving (śāntimān),
given to enjoying pleasures (bhogī), endowed with sons
and wife (putradārasamanvitaḥ) scholar (vidvān),
endowed with many good qualities and virtues
(sarvagunopetaḥ).
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Addicted to other’s wives (paradārako), effete (gatabalah),
charitable (tyāgī) and intelligent (manasvī).

YEAR #4. PRAMODA प्रमोद
Horāratna.
Always happy and give happiness to others
(sadānandayitā), truthful (satyavādi), learned
(vaipaścimo), splendour of gold’s brilliance (svarṇakānti),
contented (sukhī), honourable (mānī).
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Clever in counsel (bhavenmantrī), devoted to work
(kāryaparo), highly eloquent in speech
(atibhāṣaṇapaṭurjātaḥ).

YEAR #5. PRAJĀPATI प्रजापति
Horāratna.
Look after one’s progeny, righteous, liberal, truthful,
honour gods and brahmins, honoured.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Righteous (dharmī), highly charitable (dānaparāyaṇaḥ),
endowed with wealth and sons (sutadhanaḥ), tranquil
disposition (śāntaḥ).

YEAR #6. AṄGIRĀ अंगिरा
Horāratna.
Lustful, happy, egoistic, enjoy pleasures, good longevity,
many sons will also result such a birth.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Just and adept in policy making (nitijño), skilful and
talented (nipuṇaḥ), sagacious and compassionate
(kṛpāluraniśaṁ).

YEAR #7. ŚRĪMUKHA श्रीमुख
Horāratna.
Wealthy, highly intelligent, peaceful yet given to anger,
good for others, endowed with longevity, many sons.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Long for other women (paravadhūlolaḥ), pure and clean
(śucir), wealthy (vittavān).

YEAR #8. BHĀVA भाव
Horāratna.
Enjoy happiness and fame, charitable, agreeable
physiognomic features.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Sagacious (yogī), a king maker (rājakaro), endowed with
vast wealth and strength (mahādhanabalakhyāto).

YEAR #9. YUVA युवा
Horāratna.
Acquire fame, all virtues and longevity, quite charitable,
peaceful, very intelligent, pure in character.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Covetous (lubdha), fickle-minded (caṅcaladhīḥ), lean-
bodied (kṛśāmayatanuḥ), irascible (Krodhī), healer
(bhiṣak).

YEAR #10. DHĀTṚU धािृ
Horāratna.
Good longevity, good fortunes and skills, immersed in the
study of the Vedas, charming appearance.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Addicted to other people’s wife (anyadāranirataḥ),
devoted to the pursuit of his work and wealth
(kāryārthavādī), crafty (śaṭhaḥ).

YEAR #11. ĪŚVARA ईश्वर
Horāratna.
Well-versed in the doctrines of performing various acts,
i.e. an all – rounder, honour his teachers, extremely good-
looking, ever irascible.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Prosperous, steady minded (balamatijārto), good judge of
merit (guṇagrāhakaḥ), engage in righteous deeds
(satkarmā).

YEAR #12. BAHUDHĀNYA बहुधान्य
Horāratna.
Perform charitable activities such as construction of wells
and tanks, munificent, wealthy.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Given to material pleasures (bhogī), a skilful merchant
(vaṇigavṛttimān), beneficent, wealthy (vittavāna).

YEAR #13. PRAMĀTHĪ प्रमाथी
Horāratna.
Head an army, king’s minister, obtain boons from lord
Shiva (an ardent worshipper of lord Shiva), learned in
ancient scriptures, inclined to hoard.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Cruel (krūraḥ), sinful (pāparataḥ), irascible (krodhī),
bereft of friends (vibandhuḥ), happy (sukhī).

YEAR #14. VIKRAMA ववक्रम
Horāratna.
Fiercely valorous, destroy others’ kingdoms (or
acquisitions), intent upon committing sinful acts, heroic.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Wealthy (dhanī), commander of an army (senāpatiḥ),
gallant (śauryavān).

YEAR #15. VṚSHAPRAJĀ वृषप्रजा
Horāratna.
Slow in action, indolent, greatly foolish, carry loads, serve
others.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Pauper (daridrovīt), bereft of modesty (alajjo).

YEAR #16. CHITRABHĀNU गित्रभानु
Horāratna.
Expert in many branches of learning, justly disposed,
bold, affluent, piety, eloquence.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Splendour and appearance like that of Sūrya (dinakara
sama tejorūpavān).

YEAR #17. SUBHĀNU सुभानु
Horāratna.
Tawny eyes and hair, fair complexioned, skilful, kingly,
splendorous, but a very bad person.

Learning, conduct and virtues characteristic of his
lineage (nija kula vidyācāra dharmaḥ).

YEAR #18. TĀRAṆA िारण
Horāratna.
Wicked, sinful, heroic, incur poverty, harsh in speech, bad
person, fickle-minded, a profligate.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Exceedingly wealthy and physically strong
(bahudhanabalaśālī), a philosopher (dhivekī).

YEAR #19. PĀRTHIVA पागथिव
Horāratna.
Soft-spoken, honoured by the king, agreeable
physiognomic features, tall, wealthy.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
A King (narapatiḥ) unequal in prosperity (śrīmānatulyaḥ)
and happiness (sukhī).

YEAR #20. VYAYA व्यय
Horāratna.
Addicted to gambling and intoxicants. waste away his
resources in lustful pursuits with females, inclined to
thieving, performing bad deeds.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Lustful (kāmī), cowardly (bhīru), devoid of manners,
virtues and wealth (aguṇavān), sinful (pāpī).

YEAR #21. SARVAJIT सविजीि
Horāratna.
Engaged in fulfilling his deeds, be learned in ancient
scriptures, keep away from sins, protect himself from
diseases, short – statured, dark complexioned, corpulent.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Eloquent (vāgmī), possessed of great physical strength
(atibalavān), versed in sacred scriptures (śāstrī), virtuous
(guṇī), conversant with the subtle truth (tattvavit).

YEAR #22. SARVADHĀRĪ सविधारी
Horāratna.
Many servants, affluent, lustful, given to enjoying
pleasures, fond of sweet food, protect all his people.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Prosperous (sampanna), versed in arts forms (śilpī), dear
to the king (nṛpālapriyaḥ).

YEAR #23. VIRODHĪ ववरोधी
Horāratna.
Promote squabbles in his family, attached to the wives of
other men, inimical to one and all.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Miserable (śokī), delighting in the company of the wicked
(duṣṭaparo), indulge in many sinful deeds
(atipāpanirataḥ), cruel (krūro).

YEAR #24. VIKṚTI ववकृ ति
Horāratna.
Dark complexioned, emaciated body, devoted to arts,
devoid of virtues, protracted joints (of limbs).
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Deceptive (māyāvī), craving for sexual pleasures
(madanāturo), adept in Mantra Śāstra and its application
(mantrakriyātantradhīḥ).

YEAR #25. KHARA खर
Horāratna.
Physique smeared with dirt all over (unclean), long life,
perform agreeable deeds on behalf of others, highly
lustful and shameless.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Disinterested, disenchanted (nirmohī), devoid of virtues
(viguṇo), depressed in speech (atidīnavacanaḥ), sinful
(pāpī), wicked (khalaḥ).

YEAR #26. NANDANA नंदन
Horāratna.
Ever derive happiness, contribute for water – cisterns (to
quench travellers’ thirst), wells and tanks, feed the poor,
endowed with good qualities.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Take delight in attaining happiness or giving happiness
to others (sravānandakaro), dear to the king
(nṛpapriyanaro), conversant with the sacred hymns of
scriptures (mantrārthavit).

YEAR #27. VIJAYA ववजय
Horāratna.
Bold, invincible in battles, endowed with widespread
fame, a lord of the earth, a winner and be given to
enjoyment.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Righteous (dharmo), abound in truth and good nature
(satyasampannaśālī).

YEAR #28. JAYA जय
Horāratna.
Scholarly, honorable, honor others, an expert in all
branches of ancient scriptures, beget respect from every
quarter.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Either is a king or akin to one (rājatulyo nṛpo vā).

YEAR #29. MANMATHA मन्मथ
Horāratna.
Enjoy pleasures, lustful, eloquent speech, endowed with
happiness and ornaments, brilliant in appearance.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Craving for sexual pleasures (madanarativilolo),
victorious over foes (jitārir).

YEAR #30. DURMUKHA दुमुिख
Horāratna.
Crafty, evil disposition, wicked, shameless, marry a
woman of low caste who will serve as a concubine, or a
barren female, possess odd face arms, legs.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Devoid of virtues and good manners (guṇadhanarahitaḥ),
devoid of good manners (viśīlaḥ).

YEAR #31. HEVILAMBI हेववलंबब
Horāratna.
Wealthy with gold, money, corns, quadrupeds and robes,
possesses splendour, progeny and happiness.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Mean minded and evil (duṣṭāsmā), ardently pursue
agriculture and such operations (kṛṣyādikarmotsukaḥ).

YEAR #32. VILAMBĪ ववलंबी
Horāratna.
Mean – minded, miserly, indolent, grieved, troubled by
phlegmatic imbalance, cheat others, attached to his own
work (rather in a selfish manner) and be sinful.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Prosperous (śrīmān), follow the Brāhmaṇa and
community (viprajanāśritaḥ), sacrifices the results of his
work (phalaparityāgī).

YEAR #33. VIKĀRĪ ववकारी
Horāratna.
Unwise, extremely proud, ill – mannered, skilful, wicked,
cheat others.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Sickly (rogī), cowardly (bhīru), indigent (avittavāna),
fickle minded (calamatir), immoral (nīco).

YEAR #34. ŚĀRVARĪ शाविरी
Horāratna.
Trader, valorous, show contempt (even) to his friends, tall
– statured, emaciated, possess drooping eyes as though
one is sleepy.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Exceeding wealth (ativitta), given to enjoyment of
material pleasures (bhoga), cheerful and pleasant mind
(sumanāḥ), honest and well behaved (satyavratācāravān).

YEAR #35. PLAVA प्लव
Horāratna.
Unsteady, fickle-minded, libidinous, serve others, plough
the land (heavy labour), short – stature.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Tranquil disposition (śānto), generous (odāra),
compassionate (kṛpākaraḥ), brave (śūraḥ), devoted to own
duties or those of his community (svadharmāśrito).

YEAR #36. ŚUBHAKṚTA शुभकृ ि
Horāratna.
Very fortunate, well – wisher for others, well – educated,
righteous, long-lived, long for wealth and progeny.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Duped by women (strījanavaṅcitaḥ), pleasant appearance
(śubhakṛti), intelligent (prājñaḥ), learned (sudhīḥ).

YEAR #37. ŚOBHANA शोभकृ ि
Horāratna.
Ever be successful, libidinous, possess an attractive
appearance, virtuous and kind.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Wise (jñānī), possessed of royal virtues (kṣitīśaguṇavān),
fond of the pursuits of learning and humour
(vidyāvinodapriyo).

YEAR #38. KRODHĪ क्रोधी
Horāratna.
Tawny eyes, wealth akin to that of royalty, walk in a slow
pace, addicted to women, destroy others’ undertakings.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Addicted to evil ways (durbhogī), addicted to other
women (paradārakaḥ), extremely crafty (śaṭhabhatiḥ),
irascible (krodhayuk).

YEAR #39. VIŚVĀVASU ववश्वावसु
Horāratna.
Quite intelligent, happy, peaceful disposition, endowed
with all virtues, charitable, fond of sweet food, unsullied
character.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Honourable (mānī), fond of comic and humour
(hāsyarasapriyo), endowed by virtues, wealth, good
manners (guṇadhanaślādhī).

YEAR #40. PARĀBHAVA पराभव
Horāratna.
Long for others’ wives, crafty, friendly to his kinsfolk as
well as others, no wealth and grains.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Bad manners (duṣṭācāraparaḥ), destroyer of the lineage
(kulaghvaṁsakaḥ).

YEAR #41. PLAVAṄGA प््वंि

Indulge in offensive and sinful deeds, fallen, discard the
family traditions and be impure.

Lustful (kāmī), fond of relatives (bandhurataḥ), fond of
children (bālapriyo), and dull-witted (mandadhī).

YEAR #42. KĪLAKA कीलक
Horāratna.
Medium statured, libidinous, troubled by thirst and
hunger, hard-hearted, cause bewilderment to miscreants.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Devote to worship (devārādhanatatparo), exceedingly
fortunate (atisubhagaḥ), valiant (śauryānvitaḥ).

YEAR #43. SAUMYA सौम्य
Horāratna.
Scholar and, spend wealth, honour Brahmins and guests
(atithi), perform penance, weak physique.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Tranquil disposition (śāntaḥ), liked by all
(sarvajanapriyo), exceedingly wealthy (atidhanikaḥ),
patient and determined (dhairyavān).

YEAR #44. SĀDHĀRAṆA साधारण
Horāratna.
Wicked disposition, but pure in character, bereft of libido,
live overseas, “see gods”, irascible. Note: Seeing gods may
mean possession of unsullied spiritual pursuits.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Versed in the various branches of learning
(nānāśāstraviśārado), anxious minded (vikaladhīḥ).

YEAR #45. VIRODHAKṚTA ववरोधकृ ि
Horāratna.
Enmity with one and all, not honour the father, serve
men of his own clan, community or family.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Ever hopeful (āśāluśca), irascible (krodhī), indigent
(daridro), wandering disposition (aṭano).

YEAR #46. PARIDHĀVĪ पररधावी
Horāratna.
Learned, possess expertise in various arts, skilful in
trading, honoured by men of royalty, charitable in
disposition.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Ill-mannered (duśīlaḥ), harsh in speech (pāruṣyavāg),
possessed of wealth (vittavān).

YEAR #47. PRAMĀDĪ प्रमादी
Horāratna.
Inimical to his kinsmen, trouble his family members,
miserly, interested in sinful acts, highly intelligent.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Estrange from his relatives (bandhuvirāgakṛt), crave for
other women (paravadhūlolaḥ).

YEAR #48. ĀNANDA आनंद
Horāratna.
Many wives, very skilful, cause happiness to all, forgiving
disposition, endowed with sons and friends.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Joyous (mordātmā), devoted to the study of sacred
scriptures (nikhilāgamaśrutipara), conversant with the
subtle truth (tattvavit).

YEAR #49. RĀKṢASA राक्षस
Horāratna.
Eat anything, ungrateful, bereft of discretion between the
righteous and the unrighteous, trouble others, incur
much distress.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Sinful (pāpī), indulge in vain talk (vṛthālāpo), injure the
virtuous (apakārī satāṁ).

YEAR #50. ĀNALA आनल
Horāratna.
Seek wealth by trading activities, large family, pure in
character, swear by water.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Charitable (dātā), many virtues (dāna guṇānvito),
tranquil disposition (śāntaḥ), well mannered
(sadācāravān).

YEAR #51. PIṄGALA वपंिल
Horāratna.
Dark complexioned, rough hair, industrious, not be able
to enjoy the fruits of his labour.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Sagacious (yogī), control over the mind (jitamanā),
engage in penances (tapasvī).

YEAR #52. KĀLAYUKTA कालयुक्ि
Horāratna.
Widely helpful, eat on time but reject even the uneatable,
suffer from diseases.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Astrologer (kālajño), endowed with fortune (śrībhaga),
works of beneficence (satkarmavān).

YEAR #53. SIDDHĀRTHĪ ससद्धाथी
Horāratna.
Endowed with supernatural and healing powers, enjoy
pleasures, skilful in music, akin to a minister, famous,
charitable.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Honour devata and brahmana (guru deva bhakti
nirataḥ), successful in undertakings (siddhāthijātaḥ),
intelligent (sudhī).

YEAR #54. RAUDRA रौद्र
Horāratna.
Fierce spouse, sinful, tale-bearing disposition, short-lived.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Crooked mind (kuṭiladhīrmānī), wicked manners
(durācāravān).

YEAR #55. DURMATI दुमिति
Horāratna.
Foolish, cruel, libidinous, boastful, miserly, wealthy.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Lustful (kāmī), dull-witted (jaḍamatiḥ), distressed by
miseries (śokābhitaptaḥ), wicked (khalaḥ).

YEAR #56. DUNDUBHĪ दुन्दुभी
Horāratna.
Ever enthusiastic, kingly with horses, elephants and
large army, involved in musical performances and be
rich.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Large thighs (sthūlorū), belly arms, and head (dara bahu
mastaka tanuḥ), given to material pleasures (bhogi).

YEAR #57. RUDHIRODGĀRĪ रूगधरोद्िारी
Horāratna.
Lustful, great blemishes, troubled by weapons, indulge in
doing prohibited acts, possess ill – shaped nails.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Wise and intelligent (prājñaḥ), truthful (satyarataḥ),
happy (sukhī), wealthy (vittavān)

YEAR #58. RAKTĀKṢĪ रक्िाक्षी
Horāratna.
Suffer from eye diseases, Weak-sighted, will be a
heterodox, a wicked man and be lustful.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Tranquil disposition (śānto), fond of his relatives (bandhu
jana priyo), exceedingly fortunate (atisubhago), good
mannered (śīlavān).

YEAR #59. KRODHANA क्रोधन
Horāratna.
Perform much penance, devoid of virtues, wicked, a
metallurgist, fierce, deceiving, sinful.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Addicted to evil ways (kumārgī), hater of his relatives
(bandhudveṣī), inclined towards stealing
(coraniṣṭhārataḥ).

YEAR #60. KṢAYA क्षय
Horāratna.
Sickly right from birth. ever be in servitude and be
unrighteous.
Jātaka Pārijāta.
Good manners (śiṣṭācāraḥ), cheerful (suprasannaḥ),
pleasant appearance (surūpo), honourable (mānī), bereft
of enemies and diseases (vītārātirogaḥ).
