THE PROBLEM
 “Little research attention has been focused on
understanding formal leader selection processes in
organizations” (Carnes, Hougton, & Ellison, 2014)
 “The recruitment, search, screening, selection, and
appointment of college and university presidents is an
elongated process that urgently needs renovation”
(Fincher, 1997)

THE PROBLEM
 “There is no more important time than NOW to
consider serious process improvement steps that take
much of the guesswork out of presidential search”
(Thornburgh, 2019)
 Presidential search be studied for greater understanding
among higher educational practitioners and researchers
(Lingerfelter, 2006)
METHODOLOGY
 APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY.“cooperative co-evolutionary
search for the best in people and their organization…it
involves the discovery of what gives life to a living system
when it is most effective, alive, and constructively capable”
(Cooperrider,Whiteney, & Stavros, 2008)
 Participants: Governing board, education experts, past and
present college presidents, teachers, and students
