Salvia
By: Katelyn Vitkos
Salvia Divinorum
• A perennial herb that grows natively in the
region of Oaxaca, Mexico
• It had large green leaves, white flowers and
hollow stems
• Causes brief hallucinogenic experiences-considered
to me more of an experimental
drug than a party drug
How is it used? And is it legal?
• It is commonly commonly chewed, drank
(once extracted), and smoked after being
dried.
• Since 2006, 21 states have passed laws to
regulate or control the substance
• “Salvia currently is not a drug regulated by the
Controlled Substances Act, but several States
and countries have passed legislation to
regulate its use.” (this shocked me)
How does it affect the brain?
• The main ingredient in salvia, targets kappa
opioid receptors.
• The high is described as short and intense
lasting from 1 to 30 minutes.
• Effects include, changes in mood, visual
perception, body sensations, emtional swings,
and feelings of detachment
What are the effects?
• As of right now, the effects of it both
physically and psychologically are unknown.
• Although, experiments on rats have showed
affects on learning and memory.
• A major risked that has been assessed though
is the danger of someone losing control of
themselves leading harm to themselves and/
or others
Other facts:
• It is considered
– Non habit forming
– Cannot overdose
– Legal in Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Kansas,
Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota,
Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Virginia.
– Others recommend having a sitter while using the
drug to keep you safe.
Agreement vs. Disagreement
• Agree: I agree that more research needs to be
done on the drug. I also agree with the idea of
having another person with you SHOULD you
decide to try this drug
• Disagree: I disagree with the fact that is so
under controlled by many states while we
know so little about it. What if 5 years from
know we learn it causes serious problems?
Discussion..
• What are your thoughts on the legalization of
salvia, like California for example ..who only
restricts it to people under age 18? Do you
agree with this or disagree?
