Rebecca Nurse was a 71-year-old English woman, Christian, wife, and mother of eight children who was executed by hanging in Salem, Massachusetts in July 1692 during the Salem Witch Trials, despite being considered one of the most pious and respected citizens in Salem. She was baptized in England in 1621/22, immigrated to Salem with her family, married Francis Nurse and had eight children, but only one spoke in her defense at her witchcraft trial where she was falsely accused and found guilty of witchcraft.
Hawthorne Bio
Nathaniel Hawthorne was a 19th century American novelist born in Salem, Massachusetts. He attended Bowdoin College and published his first collection of short stories in 1837. He later joined the transcendentalist community Brook Farm but grew disillusioned with farm life. There he met his wife Sophia, and they married in 1842 when he left Brook Farm. Hawthorne went on to publish several novels including The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. He held political positions and traveled abroad before dying of cancer in 1864.
Witchcraft & witch hunts
Early Christian views did not believe in witches, but persecution began in the 1200s led by Pope Innocent III and Thomas Aquinas. Witch interrogations often involved torture and examining women's bodies for signs of witchcraft. Witches were seen as sexual deviants conspiring in secret societies, and helping/healing neighbors, which threatened the church. Between 1400-1700, an estimated 80,000-100,000 witches were killed in Europe, mostly women. The Salem Witch Trials in 1692 saw 19 people hanged and over 200 imprisoned on witchcraft charges. Modern witchcraft is now practiced as a religion by some.
