Describe the importance of
safety features in vehicles
Understand the components of
safety features in vehicles
Label the components of safety

3. Introduction
Cars today are
much safer to
travel in than cars
ten or twenty years
ago.
As a result of crash
tests, designs have
changed and are
still changing.
3
5. Anti-braking system (ABS)
Allows the wheels to
continue interacting
with the road
surface as directed
by driver
while braking,
preventing the
wheels from
skidding.

6. Crumple Zones
Crumple zones were first
introduced in 1959.
Easily crushed to increase
the time interval of impact.
In doing so, the force of the
collision would be diverted
away from the passenger's
compartment, thereby
keeping him or her from
serious injury.

7.
Seat belts
The seat belt was
introduced by Nash
Motors in 1949.
Seat belts work in the
same principle as
crumple zones.
Help to hold the
passengers in their
position during
collision and prevent
them from being
thrown forward due to
inertia.

8. Airbags
Airbags help cushion
the impact, reducing
your momentum more
slowly so that the
force is less.
Airbags are intended
to be used as a
supplementary device
to the seatbelt.
8
9. Side Impact Bar
Absorbs impact
to prevent
damage to the
car
Longer the time
of impact and
hence will
reduce the
impulsive force

10. Windscreen
Made of shatterproof glass so
that it will not
break into pieces
easily
This will reduce
injuries caused
by the pieces of
glass which
scatter during
collision10
