The document invites the reader to view a portfolio of photographs captured spontaneously by photographer Graham Storms, with each image bearing his copyright. It provides a walk through of snapshots taken in moments without notice that portray his artistic vision.
ACRLNEC 2009 - Building Community: How Combined Training Improves Customer Se...Stacy Katz

This document discusses how combined training of staff from different departments in a library can improve customer service. It outlines goals of building community and collaboration between circulation, technology, and reference departments. Key aspects of their combined training approach included joint supervisor meetings, orientation, skill-building workshops, and social activities to help staff get to know each other better. Benefits included improved support between staff managers, a shared network for student workers, better referrals and service for patrons, and an overall stronger sense of community and team spirit within the library.

Part 0. Preliminaries
Chapter 0. A first look at Banach and Hilbert spaces
┬з0.1. Warm up: Metric and topological spaces
Let us start with some basic definitions from general topology. A metric space is a pair (X,d) where X is a set and d:X├ЧXтЖТ[0,тИЮ) is
This document provides an introduction to the control of chaos, including:
1. The basic idea of chaos control is to exploit the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in chaotic systems to direct trajectories to desired states using small perturbations. This allows producing many different dynamical behaviors from the same system.
2. Early work at the University of Maryland introduced the Ott-Grebogi-Yorke (OGY) method for stabilizing unstable periodic orbits embedded in a chaotic attractor. Other control methods were later developed, including adaptive control.
3. A major challenge is "targeting" - bringing trajectories close enough to a desired state or orbit to enable control within a reasonable time frame. Methods to improve targeting were subsequently developed

This document introduces Shannon's seminal 1948 paper that established the mathematical theory of communication. In the paper, Shannon lays out the foundations for quantifying information and the capacity of communication channels. He defines the capacity of a discrete channel as the maximum rate at which information can be transmitted, which is the logarithm of the number of possible signals over the duration of transmission. Shannon also discusses how the statistical structure and predictability of messages from an information source can reduce the channel capacity needed through optimal encoding. This paper helped launch the field of information theory.
