Learning Intentions

In this lesson pupils will:
    To recap on drug identification using drugs boxes
    To raise awareness of the risks and effects associated with these
       drugs
    To become more aware of the legal situation associated with these
       drugs
   
   

I understand the positive effects that some substances can have on the mind and
body but I am also aware of the negative and serious physical, mental, emotional,
social and legal consequences of the misuse of substances.

I know that popular culture, the media and peer groups as well as my own attitudes
and values can influence how I feel about substance use and recognise the impact
this may have on my actions.

I know that the use of alcohol and drugs can affect behaviour and the decisions that
people make about relationships and sexual health.

I understand the impact that ongoing misuse of substances can have on a person’s
health, future life choices and options.

Literacy:
When I engage with others, I can make a relevant contribution, encourage others to

   communicate information, ideas or opinions
   explain processes, concepts or ideas
   identify issues raised, summarise findings or draw conclusions. LIT 3-09a




Activity 1

Introduction
Introduce yourself to the class explaining Community Health Initiative covers the
theme of Substance Misuse. As an alcohol prevention and education project
most of the work we are involved in looks at sensible and responsible drinking
as well as the safety of individuals. We are also starting to look at substance
misuse in the broader sense including smoking and illegal drug use.
Today’s lesson will look at drugs awareness.
                                                                  (Up to 5
                                                                 minutes)




 Activity 2

 Risks / Effects
 Provide each group with a set of cards. The 2 colours correspond to the drug
 names and the risks / effects associated with each drug. Ask the groups to match
 the drug to the risk / effect. Some may be easier than others depending on the
 drugs they had in their tray.
                                                                   (15 minutes)
Activity 3

Legal Issues
Ask the class if they know about the legal implications with drugs. Do they know
the difference between possession and supply? Also do they know that drugs are
given different classifications – A, B, C? Hand each group a set of 3 cards – A, B
and C. Read out different drugs and ask them to decide in their groups which
classification the drug falls in to and to hold up that card.
At the end explain the legal implications of being caught with the different
classifications and the action that could be taken if it is for possession or supply.
                                                                      (15 minutes)




  Activity 4

  Plenary

  Thank them for participating. Explain that next week we will be looking at the
  consequences of becoming involved with drugs which will look in more detail at
  the legal implications as well as the health risks etc.
                                                                    (5 minutes)




 Success Criteria:

 Following this lesson pupils will:
       To recap on drug identification using drugs boxes
       To raise awareness of the risks and effects associated with these drugs
       To become more aware of the legal situation associated with these drugs
