This lesson plan introduces pupils to alcohol awareness. It includes 4 activities: 1) introducing drugs awareness, 2) matching drugs to their risks and effects, 3) identifying the legal classifications of drugs, and 4) a concluding plenary. The lesson aims to recap drug identification, raise awareness of risks of drugs, and increase awareness of legal issues related to drugs. It is intended for level 3 pupils and will take 50 minutes. Resources include drug identification materials, risk/effect cards, and legal classification cards.

Activity 1
Introduction
Introduce yourself to the class explaining Community Health Initiative covers the
theme of Substance Misuse. As an alcohol prevention and education project
most of the work we are involved in looks at sensible and responsible drinking
as well as the safety of individuals. We are also starting to look at substance
misuse in the broader sense including smoking and illegal drug use.
Today’s lesson will look at drugs awareness.

minutes)
Activity 2
Risks / Effects
Provide each group with a set of cards. The 2 colours correspond to the drug
names and the risks / effects associated with each drug. Ask the groups to match
the drug to the risk / effect. Some may be easier than others depending on the
drugs they had in their tray.

3. Activity 3
Legal Issues
Ask the class if they know about the legal implications with drugs. Do they know
the difference between possession and supply? Also do they know that drugs are
given different classifications – A, B, C? Hand each group a set of 3 cards – A, B
and C. Read out different drugs and ask them to decide in their groups which
classification the drug falls in to and to hold up that card.
At the end explain the legal implications of being caught with the different
classifications and the action that could be taken if it is for possession or supply.

Activity 4
Plenary
Thank them for participating. Explain that next week we will be looking at the
consequences of becoming involved with drugs which will look in more detail at
the legal implications as well as the health risks etc.
