Ryder has expanded through organic growth and acquisition.
On 8th June 2011, Ryder announced the acquisition of Hill Hire Plc.
Ryder Europe completed the purchase of 100% of the equity in nationwide truck rental and contract hire company Hill Hire from Lloyds Banking Group. The purchase valued Hill Hire at £154 million and was funded entirely by Ryder. The purchase was agreed by both parties based on the strength of the Ryder bid and the significant complementary benefits of bringing the two businesses together.
All of Hill Hire’s assets comprising 13 depots located throughout the UK, approximately 4,000 HGVs, and other equipment including trailers, were transferred to Ryder; as will the company’s UK workforce of around 300 staff and technicians.
Hill Hire’s vehicle fleet, which comprised 60% tractors, complemented Ryder’s existing UK fleet which was largely rigid based, enabling us to provide improved choice and value for customers with additional payload and vehicle specification options that further strengthen the Ryder product range.
On 2nd August 2012, Ryder announced the acquisition of the Euroway Group.
Ryder are continuously looking at how we can enhance the business to better serve our customers. The acquisition of Euroway fit perfectly with our ongoing investment and growth strategy. The company's culture, innovative approach, range of services, and national customer base very much complemented the expanding Ryder offer.
Euroway’s fleet of 1,419 trucks and trailers transferred to Ryder. Vehicles range from 44 tonne tractor units to 3.5 tonne vehicles.
Euroway’s customer portfolio includes major retailers, wholesalers, food distribution companies, manufacturers, third-party logistics providers and fuel distributors across the UK and Ireland. The company’s solid base of contractual blue chip customers, both for maintenance and fleet management services, strengthens Ryder’s position in a range of key markets where we see strong potential for growth.
On 1st August 2014, Ryder announced the acquisition of Bullwell Trailer Solutions.
Ryder acquired Bullwell Trailer Solutions, building on our strong value proposition within trailers and enhancing our nationwide repair and onsite maintenance services to all of our truck and trailer customers.
Based in Lichfield, Staffordshire.
45 mobile maintenance vans.
Carry out c150,000 service or repair jobs a year.

Ryder have looked behind the MPG claims of 6 manufacturers in the UK’s only independent fuel trial
Headline findings: MPG claims from OEMs are neutralized
Choice of vehicle marque will not substantially change your mpg – the gaps were closer than anticipated, and can be further closed by addressing critical factors:
Driver expertise
The biggest influencing factor on fuel consumption in ensuring that your drivers are competent and drive efficiently
- Harsh Braking
- Acceleration
“What improvement could be gained by an OEM trained driver?”
Route choice
- A-roads
- Motorway
“Where are your vehicles running? Trunk routes? Urban?”
Load optimization
Choose the right specification vehicle for the load that you are carrying
“Can you get the job done with one 18T vehicle instead of two 7.5T vehicles?”
A new standard in technology
Euro 6 brings increased complexity in managing vehicle emissions through the process of DPF forced regeneration.
Ryder UK have been able to use experience and knowledge gained in the US (80,000 vehicles – EPA10) for the UK market
On-going significant investment in workshop technology systems and training in preparation for maintenance of Euro 6 equipment
Extensive staff training on Euro 6 to offer best advice to our customers
