Paul Laurence Dunbar was an African American poet born in 1872 in Dayton, Ohio who lived in poverty with his mother as a child. He began writing and reciting poetry at a young age and went on to work as an elevator operator and write for the local newspaper. Dunbar married Alice Ruth Moore and worked at the Library of Congress, publishing many works before his death.
