An Overview
Indian Space research Organization (1883 – 2006):
Between 1983 and 1989, I worked as Scientist/Engineer in the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle Development project
(PSLV) as core team member at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Trivandrum. The work involved, generation of
design specifications for the on-board Navigation & Guidance (N&G) packages, realizing Developmental, Qualification and
flight models (DM, QM & FM)
I have also developed various Test Software modules for evaluating the N&G packages and also involved during various
testing phases including the final evaluation phase viz Hardware-in loop-simulation (HIL) using Angular Motion Simulator
(AMS), simulating the trajectory profile and assessing the performance of the on board Navigation & Guidance system.
The Redundant Strap down Inertial Navigation System was successfully flown thereafter in all launch vehicles.
I have developed SW on the CDC Cyber machine for the inventory and accounts purpose for the Stores/Purchase and
Accounts Departments.
From 1989 to 2006, I worked at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), SHAR, Sriharikota. I was in lead role to have
proposed the concepts, configuration and design specifications & plans and also realized the first dual redundant
Distributed Control System at SDSC-SHAR, which also included the development of complete software. The realized
system is based on Siemens 155H PLCs for supporting the process automation for the pre-launch operations till the point
the Launch vehicle takes off the launch pad. The GUI is based on Genesis and application SW at controllers was based on
STL.
As a Sr. Scientist/Engineer, I was leading a Team and worked in the Instrumentation & Control System group. I was
responsible in the realization of a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Control system for Cryo process servicing requirements
along with Russians scientists.
I was the of Leader the ISRO Technical Team deputed to Russia for technical discussions with Glavkosmos and its
subsidiaries for knowledge acquisition to realize the complete Launch pad Cryo support systems at SDSC-SHAR which
included, Liquid Oxygen, Liquid Hydrogen, Helium, Nitrogen and Compressed gases systems. The activities involved
negotiations, co authoring with Russian Scientists and signing of more than 500 protocols based on discussions over a
period of 5 years. The systems were successfully installed and commissioned and supported the launch operations of GSLV
1
flown with Russian Cryo stages. My other activities also involved people management, client handling and interaction/co-
ordination with the Sr. consular/Embassy staff.
As Project Manager, for the Second Launch Pad, I was responsible for the design, development, installation &
commissioning of a Distributed process control plants involving about 35000 Input / out put channels, a large number of
Programmable Computer Controllers (PCCs) and operator stations in client-server configuration. The TMR control systems
and operator stations are networked on Ethernet TCP/IP Fibre Optic LANs. The operator stations were configured with
Windows NT & Linux and APROL SCADA package for SW development at client end. The application SW was based on C++
for controlling elements such as pumps, electro pneumatic valves, proportional & flow control valves and monitoring
parameters using measurement elements such as pressure/temperature/ level transmitters, liquid/pressure switches etc;
to transfer propellants and for gas pressurization/de-pressurization activities involving sequential as well as continuous
control operations. The application SW was also designed, developed, qualified and successfully used during various PSLV
and GSLV launch count-down operations.
I was also responsible for the realization of an autonomous Cryo-Arm retraction mechanism involving pneumo-hydraulic,
electrics and control systems enabling the arms to retract as soon as the vehicle ignition and umbilical pyro separation
commands are given thereby allowing the vehicle to take off the pad safely.
The other activities involved are as follows.
• Have projected, documented and submitted the requirements for the 5 year plans.
• Was in a number of Status Design Review committees (SDRC) as a review member/convener.
• SHAR Centre Council Member.
• Member of Recruitment Team.
I have guided a number of B.E and M.E projects while in ISRO and also mentored employees who have registered for
higher studies as part of distance education programs.
