Some knew Ward only as one of
George Macy’s featured illustrators
for The Limited Editions Club, which
published finely made editions of the
classics of literature to a small group
of subscribers for nearly three decades
under Macy’s leadership. Others knew
Ward as the founder of the Equinox
Press, a cooperative for established fig-
ures in the New York book-publishing
world—printers, publishers, and book
artists. Ward also served as supervi-
sor of the graphic arts division of the
Federal Arts Project in New York City
from 1937 to 1939. Only an artist who
rose every day at eight to fix breakfast
for his family, began working at nine,
and usually wrapped up at midnight,
with short breaks for lunch and dinner,
could have been so prolific. Except for
a brief World War II stint assembling
gyroscopes for Bendix Aviation, Lynd
Ward made his living as an artist.
Among the many books he illustrated
and techniques he employed, it was his
wordless graphic novels and his skill as
a wood engraver that served him best
and continues to yield influence today.
Will Eisner, the godfather of the
graphic novel, called Ward’s work “a
forerunner of the modern graphic
novel…He stands out as perhaps the
most provocative graphic storyteller
in this [the twentieth] century.” Scott
McCloud, author of Understanding
Comics, named Ward a “missing link”
in the development of comics. Ward
worked in a variety of media through-
out his life—watercolor, oil, lithogra-
phy, and brush drawing—but he always
retained a special fondness for wood
engraving. Over time, Ward was held
in such high regard as the preeminent
wood engraver in America that he is
the only featured artist in the wood
engraving section of the print indus-
try’s standard textbook, The Complete
Printmaker: Techniques, Traditions,
Innovations. A photo of Lynd’s right
hand gripping his graver is a wonder-
ful reminder of the nature of the wood
engraver’s art—it is, at its heart, a work-
ing man’s enterprise.

The Feast of the Annunciation is one of the earliest Christian feasts, and was already being celebrated in the fourth century. There is a painting of the Annunciation in the catacomb of Priscilla in Rome dating from the second century. Arguably, no subject has been more profoundly felt and more beautifully handled by the old painters, nor more vilely mishandled by the moderns than the Annunciation, of all the scenes in the life of Mary.
Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Christian celebration of the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus the Son of God. The Annunciation has been a key topic in Christian art in general, as well as in Roman Catholic Marian art, particularly during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Alexei Lyapunov and Lena Ehrlich are the two members of People Too, an illustrative team from Novosibirsk, Russia that draws elaborate scenes on pieces of sheet music. The colourful works capture both pastoral and urban landscapes, detailing vignettes of people fishing, dancing, and commuting. Musical notations from the songs are often incorporated into the illustrations —notes becoming steps, hills, or trunks of trees.

Lilacs have been a source of inspiration for artists throughout history; Impressionists Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet both made famous paintings depicting the beauty of lilacs. Lilacs are ubiquitous both within curated gardens and in the wild.
Lilacs have a deep-rooted history originating in ancient Greek mythology. It was said that Pan, the god of forests and fields was hopelessly in love with a nymph named Syringa. One day he was pursuing her through a forest and, afraid of his advances, she turned herself into a lilac shrub to disguise herself. To Pan’s surprise, he could not find Syringa, but he did find the shrub. Because a lilac shrub consists of hollow reeds, he cut the reeds and created the first pan pipe. The scientific name for lilac is Syringa vulgaris, and the name is derived from the Greek word “syrinks” which means pipe.

Lilacs have been a source of inspiration for artists throughout history; Impressionists Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet both made famous paintings depicting the beauty of lilacs. Lilacs are ubiquitous both within curated gardens and in the wild.
Lilacs have a deep-rooted history originating in ancient Greek mythology. It was said that Pan, the god of forests and fields was hopelessly in love with a nymph named Syringa. One day he was pursuing her through a forest and, afraid of his advances, she turned herself into a lilac shrub to disguise herself. To Pan’s surprise, he could not find Syringa, but he did find the shrub. Because a lilac shrub consists of hollow reeds, he cut the reeds and created the first pan pipe. The scientific name for lilac is Syringa vulgaris, and the name is derived from the Greek word “syrinks” which means pipe.

Madalina Andronic (Romania) Timeless Shirts
Mădălina Andronic, an established name among Romanian illustrators has developed a unique and easily recognisable style, being heavily inspired by fairy tales and folklore. Her work is quite varied, ranging from book illustrations and stationery to ceramics and wearables.
Cămăși nemuritoare / Timeless Shirts is a two-volume book that celebrates Romanian culture and, according to Mădălina Andronic, is meant to be a bridge between the past and the present, being at the same time an ode to the women who keep the ancestral traditions alive. The two books share stories and details of the traditional Romanian shirt (ia), which is part of the national costume. The launch of Timeless Shirts coincides with a very fortunate event: UNESCO has included the traditional blouse with embroidery on the shoulder (altiță)—an element of cultural identity of Romania and the Republic of Moldova—in its patrimony of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

- 7. A renowned fantasy artist and illustrator of children’s literature, Ruth Sanderson has created imagery for more than seventy-five picture books, many of which bring classic tales to life. Inspired by the art of Golden Age masters Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, Arthur Rackham, and Norman Rockwell for its strong narrative content and emotional power, Sanderson’s paintings capture perfectly the sense of wonder inherent in fairy tales. The illustrated books by the artist include The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella; The Golden Mare, The Firebird, and The Magic Ring; The Snow Princess; The Crystal Mountain; The Twelve Dancing Princesses and The Enchanted Wood, an original story.
