Yes, this talk is about running your own mainframe on your own hardware. Mainframes are old, yes, but they are still very much alive. New hardware is still being developed and there are a lot of fresh jobs in this area too. A lot of mainframes run COBOL workloads. COBOL is far from a dead language. It processes an estimated 85% of all business transactions, and 5 billion lines of new COBOL code are written every year. In this session the speaker will help you in take your first steps towards running your own mainframe. If you like then after this session you can continue to build your knowledge of mainframe systems using the links provided during the talk. Come on in and learn the basics of a completely different computer system! And it will take you less than an hour to do that!

Abstract: Many enterprises and, as many of us learned during the COVID-19 outbreak, governments, rely on mainframes to do the bulk of their data-driven work and the modern mainframe is very good at what it does. But what if you’re looking to modernize your platform and bring in the DevOps methodologies, tooling, and practice into your organization?
Today, there is an entire product line of mainframes that exclusively run Linux (RHEL, SLES, or Ubuntu). With Linux, you get access to the vast ecosystem of open source software that’s already been ported to the mainframe architecture (s390x), with more being ported every month.
If your organization is using z/OS, the Open Mainframe Project has a series of open source projects targeted specifically at the mainframe and improving usability. Zowe, for instance, helps create a consolidated API for accessing resources and workload on your system and Feilong is a z/VM connector that allows you to manage your virtual machines with familiar open source tooling like OpenStack. There are even connectors for Jenkins that allow you to integrate CI/CD pipelines with your workloads.
In this talk I’ll explore all of this in more to show you how an automated, modern environment can thrive on today’s mainframe.

He discusses the history and evolution of embedded systems from mechanical computers in the 1940s to today's "Internet of Things". Headless or display-less devices can customize Android to save resources by removing UI components. The talk will cover embedded software development, Android's initialization process, and configuring Android for headless devices.

VMware ESXi is a free bare-metal hypervisor that can be used to virtualize laptops. It has low resource usage which allows laptops to run virtual machines all day without overheating. Kernel Recipes 2013 - Easy rootfs using Buildroot
The Linux kernel is an exciting world. But if you want to get a working system, it is still essential to provide our kernel a root filesystem. The kernel developers often struggle to find a simple rootfs, adapted to their architecture, together with the tools that fits properly.
We will present how Buildroot, a tool for building embedded Linux systems, can meet the needs of kernel developers in the build of minimal rootfs for their developments.
[Defcon] Hardware backdooring is practical
This presentation will demonstrate that permanent backdooring of hardware is practical. We have built a generic proof of concept malware for the intel architecture, Rakshasa, capable of infecting more than a hundred of different motherboards. The first net effect of Rakshasa is to disable NX permanently and remove SMM related fixes from the BIOS, resulting in permanent lowering of the security of the backdoored computer, even after complete earasing of hard disks and reinstallation of a new operating system. We shall also demonstrate that preexisting work on MBR subvertions such as bootkiting and preboot authentication software bruteforce can be embedded in Rakshasa with little effort. More over, Rakshasa is built on top of free software, including the Coreboot project, meaning that most of its source code is already public. This presentation will take a deep dive into Coreboot and hardware components such as the BIOS, CMOS and PIC embedded on the motherboard, before detailing the inner workings of Rakshasa and demo its capabilities. It is hoped to raise awareness of the security community regarding the dangers associated with non open source firmwares shipped with any computer and question their integrity. This shall also result in upgrading the best practices for forensics and post intrusion analysis by including the afore mentioned firmwares as part of their scope of work.

Welcome to a beginner-friendly deep dive on how to create your own Linux distribution!
But why would you want to create one yourself?
** BACKGROUND **
Mainstream Linux distributions (e.g. Ubuntu, ArchLinux) enable their users to perform a plethora of tasks and often include the means for further customization of the system via a package manager, development tools, a desktop environment etc.
However, if you are creating a device that has a very specific set of use cases and needs to operate under strict constraints in regards to resources, power consumption, performance, or robustness, then using a full-fledged desktop operating system is infeasible. This is very common when developing embedded systems, meant to be used in an IoT application, the automotive or telecom industry, and so forth.
To create an Embedded Linux operating system, there are two paths you can follow:
1. Create a "golden image"; often the first choice when prototyping with a development board, e.g. a Raspberry Pi.
An off-the-shelf operating system, such as Debian, is hacked until it fits the purpose. Then clones of that "golden image" are created and installed in more devices.
This is good enough for creating a proof-of-concept but quickly falls short when the project becomes more complicated, larger, or the need to develop product variants arises.
2. Create a configuration-based distribution; the industry-proven way to create an Embedded Linux operating system.
Instead of maintaining the operating system as a big binary, its components are specified in version controllable configuration files. Setting everything up may require a steeper learning curve since things are not already conveniently in place. However, it is the only sustainable way to go forward when it comes to serious Embedded Linux development.

** WORKSHOP **
In this workshop, we are going to demonstrate the "ingredients" needed to build your own Linux distribution using the Yocto project. Then we will run our distribution on a Raspberry Pi board.
Yocto is a collection of tools and processes enabling the creation of configurable Embedded Linux distributions. You define which components are to be included in your operating system with software- and hardware-specific configuration files. "Recipes" determine how these components are built and also what they depend upon. Finally, these recipes are utilized by "bitbake" (a tool offered by Yocto) to build your custom Linux image.
During the workshop, we will go over the setup needed to create a custom operating system for a typical IoT device. It boots up, automatically connects to the internet, and launches a C++ demon that fetches information from a cloud API.
A million ways to provision embedded linux devices
Drew Moseley presented on the many ways to provision embedded Linux devices. There are over a million ways due to variations in boards, manufacturers, bootloaders, storage, and more. He discussed common provisioning models including SD cards, eMMC, SPI flash, raw NAND, and Android fastboot. In this workshop, we are going to demonstrate the "ingredients" needed to build your own Linux distribution using the Yocto project. Then we will run our distribution on a Raspberry Pi board.
Yocto is a collection of tools and processes enabling the creation of configurable Embedded Linux distributions. You define which components are to be included in your operating system with software- and hardware-specific configuration files. "Recipes" determine how these components are built and also what they depend upon. Finally, these recipes are utilized by "bitbake" (a tool offered by Yocto) to build your custom Linux image.
During the workshop, we will go over the setup needed to create a custom operating system for a typical IoT device. It boots up, automatically connects to the internet, and launches a C++ demon that fetches information from a cloud API.
A million ways to provision embedded linux devices
Drew Moseley presented on the many ways to provision embedded Linux devices. There are over a million ways due to variations in boards, manufacturers, bootloaders, storage, and more. He discussed common provisioning models including SD cards, eMMC, SPI flash, raw NAND, and Android fastboot. Tools like Yocto, U-Boot, and Mender can help manage the process, while considerations like manufacturing, development workflows, and product development also impact provisioning.

This talk presents a new client virtualization platform that allows Xen to be used on mobile phones and tablets. These embedded devices require special consideration, particularly in the context of client virtualization. We will outline the technical challenges of virtualizing common tablet devices, including the touchscreen, audio, webcam, accelerometer, Wi-Fi, cellular, and display devices. TrustZone implications will also be discussed.
We will present the current project status and what it took (or will take) to get NVIDIA's Jetson TX1 development board and Google's Pixel C tablet running multiple Android instances. We will provide an overview of the platform’s build toolchain and source trees. Finally, we will open up discussions on the future of the platform and the challenges associated with improving Xen adoption on mobile ARM devices.

FreeNAS 10 is an open source storage and application hosting software based on FreeBSD 11.0. It uses ZFS as its default filesystem and includes over 400 third party packages. The goals of FreeNAS 10 are to make complex storage systems simple for users while retaining powerful features for administrators. It aims to provide flexibility for application hosting and storage, as well as situational awareness through its GUI and CLI interfaces. FreeNAS 10 simplifies many storage and networking tasks including ZFS storage setup, file sharing, directory services, services management, virtualization, and containerized applications.

Hardware backdooring is practical : slides
This presentation will demonstrate that permanent backdooring of hardware is practical. We have built a generic proof of concept malware for the intel architecture, Rakshasa, capable of infecting more than a hundred of different motherboards. The first net effect of Rakshasa is to disable NX permanently and remove SMM related fixes from the BIOS, resulting in permanent lowering of the security of the backdoored computer, even after complete earasing of hard disks and reinstallation of a new operating system. We shall also demonstrate that preexisting work on MBR subvertions such as bootkiting and preboot authentication software bruteforce can be embedded in Rakshasa with little effort. More over, Rakshasa is built on top of free software, including the Coreboot project, meaning that most of its source code is already public. This presentation will take a deep dive into Coreboot and hardware components such as the BIOS, CMOS and PIC embedded on the motherboard, before detailing the inner workings of Rakshasa and demo its capabilities. It is hoped to raise awareness of the security community regarding the dangers associated with non open source firmwares shipped with any computer and question their integrity. This shall also result in upgrading the best practices for forensics and post intrusion analysis by including the afore mentioned firmwares as part of their scope of work.

Linux later combined with the GNU operating system and tools to become a full fledged open source alternative to proprietary operating systems.

This document describes how the author used Python, PHP, JQuery and Linux to visualize the oxygen saturation levels of his stepdaughter Anouschka, who has several medical conditions. He connected an oxygen saturation measurement device to his computer via serial port and wrote a Python script to log the data to a MySQL database. He then used PHP and the DyGraph JavaScript library to visualize the oxygen saturation and heart rate data over time based on the logged data, allowing doctors to better monitor her levels. This helped provide more data to understand her varying oxygen levels during sleep.
