2. Pilgrimage is a journey that someone makes for
religious reasons.
The Qur‟an ( Muslims holy book) also commands
Muslims to go:
“Perform the pilgrimage and the visit for Allah”
Quran 2:196
Once the person has completed Hajj, a man is
called hajji and the women is called hajja.
However if the Muslim can not go they pay
another to go for them.
A Muslim must go on pilgrimage at least once in
their lives.
3. This journey usually takes 5-6 days. It takes place in
Dhul-Hijjah (the Islamic month).
Pilgrimage takes place in Makkah. This is because
Muhammad spent most of his life there.
Over 2 million pilgrims perform Hajj every year.
4. Purifying
Before starting pilgrimage, Muslims need to purify
themselves.
They can do this by either having a full bath or
performing wudu.
After this a woman should wear white and only
show their hands and faces. A man will also where
two white unsewn pieces of cloth, one around the
wait and the other over the shoulder
7. The Ka‟bah is situated in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Some Muslims call it the “house of god”.
It is covered in a black cloth called the Kiswah.
It is said to contain the Black stone. It is called the black
stone because it is said it used to be white but mans sins
turned it black.
On Pilgrimage a Muslim circles the Ka‟bah 7 times anti-
clockwise this represents all believers united in the
worship of Allah.
9. After the Muslims circle the Ka‟bah they
go to the path between the As-safa and
Al-Marwa hills where they will run down
it, again, seven times.
This represents
when Hajar, Isma‟il‟s mother, frantically
searched for water in the desert. Isma‟il
dug his heels in the sand where Hajar had
left him and a spring appeared.
People still visit the Zamzam well today.
11. This occurs on 9 Dhul-Hijjah.
The Muslim‟s come to the Plain of Arafat
and once they arrive they beg forgiveness
for all of their sins.
This is said to be the most important part of
pilgrimage as it reminds them of the Day
of Judgement that‟s looming.
13. This occurs on 10, 11 and 12 Dhul-Hijjah.
The „Stoning of the devil‟ is where pilgrims
throw pebbles at the „Great Devil‟ which is
three stone pillars.
This happens in a place called Mina
14. During pilgrimage the pilgrims will make an
animal sacrifice to show everything has
been given by Allah. But they only do this if
they can afford it.
They must give 1/3 of the meat to the poor
At the end of Hajj both men and women
will have their hair cut to show they are
leaving the sacred state.
