• In March 1993, the artificial feeding and hydration of
22-year-old Tony Bland was withdrawn after nearly
four years, during which he had been in a persistent
vegetative state and shown no sign of improvement.
Andrew Devine, aged 26 at the time, suffered similarly
and was later diagnosed as being in a persistent
vegetative state, but in March 1997 – a month short of
eight years – it was reported that he had emerged from
the condition and was now able to communicate using
a touch-sensitive pad. Thus, Tony Bland was the final
victim.
• Jon-Paul Gilhooley was the youngest victim. He had
died aged 10. It is said that it was his death that
inspired his cousin, a famous footballer, to reach the
heights that he did in his career.
• What caused the deaths of Bland and Gilhooley?

• Due to his desire for accuracy, X added the logo of a real-life airline,
Y, to the crash debris in one of his comics. This upset Y and a
representative complained to X about the adverse publicity that
they might suffer, arguing, "It's scandalous, none of our aircraft has
ever crashed. You have done us a considerable wrong." Y had
cooperated closely with X, facilitating his research by providing
voluminous reading material, contemporary photographs, and film
footage of India and Nepal, especially of Delhi and Kathmandu. The
crashed aircraft's tail number remained "VT", the correct country
code, but X agreed to change the airline logo in the published
edition to the fictional Sari-Airways.

• Tatyana Kotova is a Russian long jumper who
won gold at the 2005 World Championships at
Helsinki. Why was she in the news in early
2014, especially in Indian newspapers?
3
• Tatyana Kotova was found this year to have been
caught for doping after her samples collected
during the 2005 World Athletics Championships
in Helsinki
• As a result, she was stripped of all her
subsequent medals
• Hence, Anju Bobby George became the first
Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal
in a major world event after international
governing body IAAF upgraded her second place
finish at the 2005 Monaco World Athletics Final
to the top spot

• In 2010, a poster using the handle Snowqueens Icedragon
posted a Twilight fanfic called “Master of the Universe” on
a Twilight fansite. Brief description of the story reads:
• “When her friend is too ill to attend a vital job interview,
Bella Swan takes her place and meets multi-millionaire CEO
Edward Cullen for the first time. Cullen takes an interest in
her and introduces her to realms of desire she had never
thought possible.”
• As the story became popular, its writer pulled it off the
internet. Who is Snowqueens Icedragon? OR What did this
piece of fan-fiction later develop into?
4
• EL James wrote Fifty Shades of Grey initially
as Twilight fan-fiction. As it became popular,
she wrote a separate book series

• This is Virginia Wade, a British tennis great, criticising a certain
appointment.
• "I thought it was initially a joke. There’s not quite the same intensity
about him as maybe a year ago. Having Lendl there really made him
think, ‘I’ve got him watching me so I better be absolutely full tilt all
the time’.It’s hard to read him. Appointing X was a total shock, I
thought they were all fooling around. I think again he’s maybe
trying to mess with everybody. She was a great player, she’s a great
person. I think she was a little fragile mentally because she had the
capabilities of beating everybody. She’s laidback, she’s a very nice,
mature person. But I can’t work it out at all. You like to try to get
behind people’s thinking but I can’t really with this one. You try to
see what somebody’s going to offer that player. Unless he just
needs somebody there to say ‘Well done’, which is possible, too. As
a player you need somebody to endorse you sometimes and not try
to change anything.”

• The X theory about Y states that ____(1)__ is just a figment of
Cameron's imagination, similar to the plot of X, and Sloane is a girl
Cameron secretly loves but hasn't ever interacted with before. Sloane's
boyfriend is ___(1)____, again similar to the plot of X where the
narrator is able to interact with the girl of his dreams only by becoming
____(2)_____.
• Part of the reason the three characters can see so much of Chicago in
less than one day is that Cameron is alone, just imagining it all. This
theory would also explain the more fantastic aspects of the film, like
how the entire city ralles around the 'sick' _____(1)_____.
• Some critics also argue that X is an unoffcial sequel to Y and that
Cameron and _______(1)____ of Y are actually the narrator and
______(2)______ in X. They say that Cameron still has unresolved
issues with his life and they manifest themselves in more violent ways
in X.

along the lines of “Well guys the bowlers have done
their job. They’re 10 runs short of what they should
have got. Let's go and get it.” And everyone burst
out laughing because everyone knew that ___
wasn't really 10 runs short. But it turned out to be
that way.

13. These are the characters of a show called The
Honeymooners. What famous TV show did they
inspire?
Ralph Kramden: He is frustrated by his lack of success, and often develops get-rich-quick-
schemes. Ralph is very short tempered, frequently resorting to bellowing, insults and hollow
threats. Well hidden beneath the many layers of bluster however, is a soft-hearted man who
loves his wife and is devoted to his best pal. He enjoys bowling, playing pool and being a
member in the Loyal Order of Raccoon Lodge.
Alice Kramden : Ralph's patient, level-headed but sharp-tongued wife of 15 years. She often
finds herself bearing the brunt of Ralph's insults, which she returns with biting sarcasm.
Edward Norton: Ralph's best friend (and upstairs neighbour). He is considerably more good-
natured than Ralph, but nonetheless trades insults with him on a regular basis. Ed often gets
mixed up in Ralph's schemes, and his carefree and rather dimwitted nature usually results in
raising Ralph's ire, while Ralph often showers him with verbal abuse and throws him out of
the apartment when Ed irritates him.
Trixie Norton: Ed's wife and Alice's best friend. She did not appear on every episode and had
a less developed character, though she is shown to be bossy towards her husband.

carved a permanent niche in the game's history
with a hat-trick on debut and and two hat-tricks in

• The Germans sometimes refer to the red card as
"Arschkarte" which literally translates to 'ass card'.
This came from a practice of football referees to
keep the yellow card in their shirt breast pocket
and the red card in the rear pocket of their pants.
Why did the referees do this?
16
• Back in the days of black-and-white TV, the only
way viewers could differentiate between the yellow
and red cards was the fact that the referees drew
the cards from different pockets
• That practice has simply carried on till today (even
though we have colour TV)

read the printing on the card inside the envelope, became confused, or
was too "drunk" or "stoned" to announce the winner properly.
• However, this theory was disproved when the Academy explained that two
officials from PWC have been stationed in the wings at every Academy

Rude Removal is an episode segment of the a popular TV series
X. The episode was produced during the original run of X, but the
channel refused to let it air due to the characters swearing, even
though the swear words were censored.
The title card for "Rude Removal" shows B gesturing with her
middle finger as well as A mooning towards the audience.
A invents The Rude Removal System, a machine to remove
the rudeness from his sister B. However, B thinks A is the one
who is rude, so they start fighting and wander into the machine.
Inadvertently, the Rude Removal System is activated, splitting the
pair into well-behaved and rude halves. This creates two evil,
rude duplicates, who use profanity and harbor destructive
tendencies. The evil clones proceed to insult their mother and
destroy the house. A and B now have to stop their rude halves
from causing trouble and consequently being punished by their
Mom, who believes the actions of the evil clones were that of her
children.

the role of X. At the time of the casting
session, actor A was in Namibia. He

• X is a former India cricketer and politician. He won the
Arjuna Award in 1986. To date, X is the only cricketer to
score a century in each of his first three tests. John
Woodcock, a noted cricket writer, said of him, "It's no use
asking an Englishman to bat like X. It would be like
expecting a greyhound to win the Epsom Derby"
• Y was the winner of Miss India in 1976. Y is X's second wife,
whom he met in the early 1990s at a commercial shoot and
married in 1996. There were rumours of an affair between
them in 1994. Y has also anchored Doordarshan's popular
Sunday morning show Rangoli and played the title role in
Zee TV's Chandni.
• X and Y separated recently after, ironically, X was linked
with badminton star Jwala Gutta.
2
• According to her autobiography, X originally did not want to meet Y,
fearing that he was a stereotypical arrogant athlete. He won her over
and they eloped at San Francisco City Hall in January 1954.
• An incident between the couple is supposed to have occurred
immediately after the ________ scene in The Seven Year Itch which was
filmed on September 1954, in front of Manhattan's Trans-Lux 52nd
Street Theater. It was director Billy Wilder's idea to turn the shoot into a
media circus. The couple then had a yelling battle in the theater lobby. A
month later, X filed for divorce on grounds of mental cruelty 274 days
after the wedding.
• Y re-entered X's life as her marriage to Arthur Miller was ending. Their
"just friends" claim did not stop remarriage rumors from flying.
Reporters staked out her New York City apartment building. Bob Hope
"dedicated" Best Song nominee "The Second Time Around" to them at
the 33rd Academy Awards.
• Id this celebrity couple.

• X was originally interested in football in his youth but after he kept getting
injured, his brother suggested cricket (and for that, all Indians are thankful).
A Padma Shri winner in 2004, X is famous for having made Steve Waugh wait
at the toss and has a debut Test century at Lords to his name. He is also
currently part of the Justice Mudgal Committee probe panel looking into the
IPL spot fixing investigations.
• Y is a predominantly South Indian actress. However, her debut was in Baaghi:
A Rebel for Love, opposite Salman Khan in 1990. With Karisma Kapoor, she
was also one of the female leads in 1994's Suhaag with Ajay Devgan and
Akshay Kumar. She then moved South, where she proceeded to become one
of the top actresses. X, apparently, met Y in late 1999, when he was the top-
rated ODI batsmen in the World.
• Their rumoured affair broke in February 2001, when newspapers in Chennai
published photos of X and Y visiting Kalahasti temple, near Tirupati. Y finally
went public about the alleged affair in 2010, stating she was forced to end
the affair in the interest of the nation - ""There was a career at stake, besides
other things, so one had to part. A smaller interest had to be sacrificed for

• Y has two Grammys and a Golden-Globe nomination to her name.
When Y was four, her father took her to a local Middle Eastern
restaurant, where Y first heard the doumbek, a traditional drum used
in Arabic music and which typically accompanied belly dancing. She
started dancing on the table, and the experience made her realize that
she wanted to be a performer. Y has also served as a coach on the
American version of The Voice, having appeared in seasons 4 and 6.

Spanish taxes on their Spanish source income and assets. The law gained its
nickname after X became one of the first foreigners to take advantage of it,
when he moved to Spain in June 2003.
• X started dating Y in 1997, after she attended one of his matches. They were
married in July 1999. Y shot to fame with the all-female pop-group Spice

Y has also anchored Doordarshan's popular

media circus. The couple then had a yelling battle in the theater lobby. A
month later, X filed for divorce on grounds of mental cruelty 274 days
after the wedding.
• Y re-entered X's life as her marriage to Arthur Miller was ending. Their

This upset Y and a representative complained to X about the adverse publicity that they might suffer, arguing, "It's scandalous, none of our aircraft has ever crashed. You have done us a considerable wrong." Y had cooperated closely with X, facilitating his research by providing voluminous reading material, contemporary photographs, and film footage of India and Nepal, especially of Delhi and Kathmandu. The crashed aircraft's tail number remained "VT", the correct country code, but X agreed to change the airline logo in the published edition to the fictional Sari-Airways. • X? Y? Having Lendl there really made him think, ‘I’ve got him watching me so I better be absolutely full tilt all the time’.It’s hard to read him. Appointing X was a total shock, I thought they were all fooling around. I think again he’s maybe trying to mess with everybody. She was a great player, she’s a great person. I think she was a little fragile mentally because she had the capabilities of beating everybody. She’s laidback, she’s a very nice, mature person. But I can’t work it out at all. You like to try to get behind people’s thinking but I can’t really with this one. You try to see what somebody’s going to offer that player. Unless he just needs somebody there to say ‘Well done’, which is possible, too. As a player you need somebody to endorse you sometimes and not try to change anything.” • Id X.

Sloane's boyfriend is ___(1)____, again similar to the plot of X where the narrator is able to interact with the girl of his dreams only by becoming ____(2)_____. • Part of the reason the three characters can see so much of Chicago in less than one day is that Cameron is alone, just imagining it all. This theory would also explain the more fantastic aspects of the film, like how the entire city ralles around the 'sick' _____(1)_____. • Some critics also argue that X is an unoffcial sequel to Y and that Cameron and _______(1)____ of Y are actually the narrator and ______(2)______ in X. • 80. 13. These are the characters of a show called The Honeymooners. What famous TV show did they inspire? Ralph Kramden: He is frustrated by his lack of success, and often develops get-rich-quick- schemes. Ralph is very short tempered, frequently resorting to bellowing, insults and hollow threats. Well hidden beneath the many layers of bluster however, is a soft-hearted man who loves his wife and is devoted to his best pal. He enjoys bowling, playing pool and being a member in the Loyal Order of Raccoon Lodge. Alice Kramden : Ralph's patient, level-headed but sharp-tongued wife of 15 years. She often finds herself bearing the brunt of Ralph's insults, which she returns with biting sarcasm. Edward Norton: Ralph's best friend (and upstairs neighbour). He is considerably more good- natured than Ralph, but nonetheless trades insults with him on a regular basis. Ed often gets mixed up in Ralph's schemes, and his carefree and rather dimwitted nature usually results in raising Ralph's ire, while Ralph often showers him with verbal abuse and throws him out of the apartment when Ed irritates him. Trixie Norton: Ed's wife and Alice's best friend. She did not appear on every episode and had a less developed character, though she is shown to be bossy towards her husband.

X even dedicated the film to his daughter, who wanted him to make "song-and-dance" films. • Curiously, X's inspiration in real life, Y, also made a 3-D fantasy movie in 2011 after his wife told him "Why don't you make a film our daughter can see for once?". The movie is based on a children's book, written by Brian Selznick, that Y was reading to his daughter one night. • "I thought, wouldn't it be nice to make a movie she could see, or that we could see together. Just watching her turn the pages of the book (which has 284 pictures), I knew that people would respond...I don't consider it a children's movie. I think it's a movie children should see with their parents. Then talk about it," says Y. • Id X and the movie Y made for his daughter in 2011. (Part points available on the bounce

If a wrong name were ever read, one of the officials would immediately step up to the podium and announce the correct winner. • Id X.

Inadvertently, the Rude Removal System is activated, splitting the pair into well-behaved and rude halves. This creates two evil, rude duplicates, who use profanity and harbor destructive tendencies. The evil clones proceed to insult their mother and destroy the house. A and B now have to stop their rude halves from causing trouble and consequently being punished by their Mom, who believes the actions of the evil clones were that of her children. 27. A, B, X?

He assembled an audition tape in a hotel bathroom, the only place with enough light, and apologized for its appearance. A improvised, using an umbrella as a substitute prop. Singer was very impressed by his performance and commented on how well the "American actor" was able to grasp the character.
