Khap panchayats are traditional caste-based councils in parts of North India that were historically responsible for social organization but now are known for "honor killings" of couples who marry outside their caste or village. While individuals have the fundamental right to choose who they marry under the Indian Constitution, khap panchayats continue operating as parallel justice systems, resorting to violence and social boycotts against couples and families. There have been few legal challenges to khap panchayats despite their violations of people's rights.
