3. 1 Prepare medication for one person at a time.
2 Follow the 10 rights of medication administration.
3 Be sure to read labels at least three times
(comparing medication administration record before
administering medication.
4 Do not allow any other activity to interrupt
administration of medication to a patient (e.g phone call,
any other discussion with staff).

medication administration processes.
6 Document all medication as soon as they are given.
7 Ensure that the calculations are correct.
8 Write intravenous fluid orders clearly, ensuring that
additives are quantified per litre and rates noted per
hour.

5. • Identify the client
• Ensure that the patient has no history of drug allergy
• Check the diagnosis & age of the patient
• Check the medication order
• Be accurate during all steps of medication
administration.
• Follow the medication has been written in case sheet.
• Report any error promptly.
• Make an assessment of the patient and follow exactly all
procedures related to medication administration.
• Obtaining current knowledge base of drug.

6. • Check for any contraindication present
• Explain the procedure to the patient. Discuss the need
of medications
• Record: administration of drug, i.v. flow rate, site used,
vital signs taken immediately before
administration
• Evaluate and record; patients response to drug
• Observation and record; adverse reaction and
frequency
• Calculate drug doses accurately
• Do not leave medication at patient bed side
• Institute necessary observations and measures before
drug administration (e.g. B.P measurement
before antihypertensive administration)
• Do not save part of the tablet to be used later
