New forms of communication like social media have rapidly evolved over the past three decades and redefined how elections are contested and citizens engage in politics. These new media blur boundaries between different types of political information and have drastically shifted the quality and quantity of information available. Additionally, fake news disseminated through social media algorithms to specific groups plays on people's preexisting political beliefs, while the watchdog role of traditional press aims to provide transparency and check government activities by supplying citizens with information. New media has vastly increased how far political information can reach, even the most disinterested citizens, and enabled digital public squares for openly sharing opinions.
