ENVIRONMENT
Environment is a word which describes, in the aggregate, all of the
extrinsic (external) forces influences and conditions, which affect the
life, nature, behaviour and the growth, development and maturation
of living organisms.
Environment covers all the outside factors that have
acted on the individual since he began life.
OBJECTIVES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STUDIES
Creating the awareness about environmental problems in the
students.
Giving basic knowledge about the environment and its related
problems to the students.
Developing an attitude of concern for the environment amongst
the students.
Motivating students to participate in environment protection and
environment improvement.
Acquiring skills to help the concerned individuals in identifying
and solving environmental problems.
SCOPE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL
STUDIES
 Natural resources–their conservation and
management.
 Ecology and biodiversity.
Environmental pollution and control.
Social issues in relation to development and
environment.
Human population and environment.
Environmental studies is multidisciplinary
because it includes many different academic
fields:
Chemistry, Physics, Medical science, Life science, Agriculture, Public health, Sanitary engineering,
Geography, Biology.
Environmental studies is the science of physical phenomena in the environment. It covers every
issue that affects an organism.
Environmental studies uses knowledge from different disciplines to understand how issues
like:
 Alternative energy systems
 Pollution control and mitigation
 Natural resource management
 The effects of global warming and climate change
 Environmental studies also incorporates social sciences to understand human relationships,
perceptions, and policies towards the environment.
Other examples of environmental
studies topics include:
Types of pollution and their harmful effects on living
organisms
Biodiversity, its types, and causes of degradation
Deforestation and methods to increase forest cover
Desertification
Waste disposal and sewage treatment
OUTCOMES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
STUDIES
o Illustrate Depleting Nature of Environmental Resources, Global
Environmental Crisis and the concept of Ecosystem .
o Adapt to the concept of 3R (Reuse, Recovery, Recycle).
o Suggest different control measures related to Environmental
Pollution.
o Illustrate and analyse various Case Studies related to
Environmental Legislation.
o Demonstrate the working of Renewable Energy sources.
o Illustrate the Techniques of Disaster Management and Green
Building
