I think these selfies may be unusual, but they are a very happy and funny way of promoting the collection and our
library, and have very close and friendly relationships with the performers.

Editor's Notes
Good morning and welcome to the City treasures session. First of all, let me thank you all for coming here today. This is my first IAML meeting and first time in Rome. I'm impressed. Attending an IAML meeting and visiting Rome have both been on my bucket list.
This is my first IAML meeting and first time in Rome. I'm impressed. Attending an IAML meeting and visiting Rome have both been on my bucket list.
I would like to say thank you to The International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres, the IAML Hungarian National Branch and Bródy Sándor Public Library for supporting my participation in this congress.
My purpose today is to talk about how I use my hobby for making my public library more well-known and more popular. I am going to focus on 4 main points. The first is the town, the second is my library, the third is web 2.0 tools, and finally I’m going to talk about my hobby. My presentation will take about 25 minutes. There will be time for questions afterwards.
Let’s start by looking at my hometown. I live in Eger. Eger is the county seat of Heves, and the second largest city in Northern Hungary.
The centre of Eger is often called "the Baroque Pearl of Europe". Eger is best known for its Castle, thermal baths, historic buildings (including the northernmost Turkish minaret, Cathedral, Lyceum, Archdiocesan Library)….and wines (the famous Bull’s Blood and Star of Eger – The name comes from the Novel written by the most famous writer of Eger)
Géza Gárdonyi is the most popular writer of Eger. His well-known novel is the Eclipse of the Crescent Moon ..about the Turkish attack against the castle of Eger in the 16th century
Another popular tourist attraction is The Egri Road – Beatles Museum
Several concerts, music festivals are organized all year round for the lovers of music. Music can be studied in Farkas Ferenc Music School and at the Music Department of Eszterházy Károly University. There is a symphony orchestra and there are also choirs..
and several local bands play pop music, rock music, punk, hardcore, original folk music, worldmusic etc. Some examples…
Street musician
and so on…
The population of Eger is 54,609 and 25 % are registered library users (13000). This leads to my next point. I work as a music librarian at Bródy Sándor Public Library. The Public Library of Eger opened in 1952. The library is also the center of Heves County library network, and has regional responsibilities. The present stock contains 302000 library units.
The library was named after the Hungarian writer Sándor Bródy. He was born in Eger.
In 2016 the Library won the most important professional award in Hungary, which is called Library Excellence Award. All my collegues are keeping their fingers crossed for me and send their love to the Congress.
In addition to the Central Library there are also different service points and special collections: a Children’s Library, a Special Collection for Law and Economy, 2 branch libraries
A Park Library
a swimming pool library
a shopping mall library
and a Music and Foreign Language Department. The music collection of the library opened in 1971. In 2008 we merged with the Foreign language section, and since then we are the Music and Foreign Language Department. Our department is next door to the central library
Our collection has 4000 books on music, 2000 volumes of sheet music, 7000 CDs, 2000 LPs (vinyls), 600 Music-DVDs, 8 journals and magazines on music. We have CDs of all kinds of music genres. We have the largest popular music collection in Northern Hungary.
We are using an integrated library system, but we have also kept a traditional card-index system for cataloguing the vinyls. (You can see a nice planking in the photo)

Nowadays younger generations only stream and pirate and physical loans are declining. This new digital generation doesn’t know and appreciate the quality of traditional media and their visual appearance (cover, sleeve notes etc.). I was thinking about how we could bring back the younger ones.
One possibility was introducing web 2.0 services. In this part of my presentation, I’d like to tell you about various tools of web 2.0 that my library use. Keywords: Web-based, Free, Social. Focus is on: Creating, Publishing, Sharing, Collaborating. The idea of Library 2.0 was borrowed from Web 2.0. The biblioblogosphere was the first form of Library 2.0
I started the blog of the music department in 2007. It is called Hangtárnok (Can not be translated, it’s a wordplay, it means something like Sound Keeper/Sound Treasurer). According to a survey it is the most popular library blog in Hungary. The themes of the blog are: music, library and Eger. I’m the chief editor, my nickname is Trinity - as in Matrix. My purpose is to provide information about music, library news to the readers and call attention to free internet sources, and web 2.0 tools.
Through the blog we gained a lot of music lovers as friends from Hungary and Abroad. The readers suggested to create a category entiteled “Our Readers Suggest”. We have come into contact with a French and a Catalan music library blog.
The most visited posts of the blog are about free sheet music and posts where I recommend music for holidays and special occasions. Most people are searching for sheet music, audio cuts, animal sounds. In 2015 the blog had over 200000 visitors, that means 575 people daily. I regularly write about the events of the IAML Hungarian National Branch under the "IAML" tag
I have made a list the other web 2.0 tools, that we use. If you are interested, visit this site. You can see we appear on the platforms, which one often used by our users.
Our library uses the most popular video sharing website to share their library videos and live concert videos. We have uploaded 344 videos, we have 368 subscibers and (over 2 millions) 2004174 viewers. I’m happy to edit slideshows to make our library units more popular and well-known. The most popular one is a “School Leavers’ Farewell Ceremony” video.
I created a Playlist of Songs about Libraries and Librarians. //SlideShare is the best way to share our library and music presentations online. After the Congress I will upload this presentation here.
We use not only the web 2.0 tools to attract the younger generation in the library, but also grab new innovations to be up-to-date. We started a new video game club on Xbox One platform with kinect,we call it MusiX-box club where music rhythm games can be played: Guitar Hero Live (12+), Disney Fantasia Music Evolved (3+), Just Dance 2016 (3+). We present the games to school groups, and individuals can come and play every day in the afternoon.
We have very good personal relationships with local performers, most of them are regular visitors to our library, some of them we have known since their childhood. I myself love live music and I’m a regular concert goer. And finally the last point is my hobby.
My hobby is taking photos with musicians, I have been using it to popularize the library for a couple of years now. This is how I began
It began seven years ago. I was at an AC/DC concert in 2009, and luckily in the bar I saw Sándor Révész, he was standing behind me in the queue. R.S. is a legendary singer of the legendary hungarian band Piramis, he was the idol of my childhood. I turned to him, I hesitated a bit, I didn’t want to bother him. I asked, may I take a picture with you? He kindly agreed. I was very glad, and since then I always feel this joyful, euphoric feeling when I take a photo with one of my favourites. Because I feel that for these seconds they are only mine.
I take photos with those musicians whose concert I attend. Have a look at the photos:
I have photos with more than 300 bands and singers, and I like all kinds of music genres, but I love rock and world music the best.
After the concert I simply go to the stage or backstage, and ask the manager or the performers, if it is possible to take photos. If they agree I wait for the right moment, or simply take the photo at that moment with the help of my friends.
It is also possible that the performer has a short rest and then comes out to sign stuff and this is when I ask her/him for a photo.
Unfortunately I couldn’t take photo with Slash (his my favourite guitarist), his bodyguard didn’t let me close to him. This is my only failure.
Sometimes I can afford to travel to Budapest, and buy VIP or “great and meet” ticket. This is how I could meet some scandinavian metal bands.
My hobby became a part of my work. We invite many artist, musicians, poets, writers to the library and the head of the library and my collegues help me to take photos with them. Suddenly I had an idea why not have the library’s books and CDs signed by the performers.
Both are published on Hangtárnok blog. Sometimes these posts are shared on the bands’ own Facebook sites.
On Kaláka Folk Festival I met an italian band, a band from Sicily, Oi Dipnoi. So I have an italian photo and an italian autograph as well.
CD’s with autographs are very popular with our library users.
There was a show in Eger with my favourite rockabilly band Mystery Gang, after the concert in the backstage they were very kind and friendly to me. They were suprised that I’m from the local library. And a girl (also a fan) was standing by me, when she heard that I came from the library, she remarked: “How lucky that I have renewed my library loan” :)
A moving/touching story: My favourite ethno-funk musician is Balázs Szabó. On our last meeting he said: you are a member of my family.
I’m a happy and lucky librarian, I love my work. My hobby is my work and my work is my hobby.
In conclusion: I think these selfies may be unusual, but they are a very happy and funny way of promoting the collection and our library, and have very close and friendly relationships with the performers.
And finally let’s look at our Happy video. In 2014 on library week we made the library version of Pharrell Williams Happy video. (Look at a short part of our Happy video)
Well, that completes my presentation. Thank you for your attention. And now I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
If you have any more questions, I’m happy to answer them in e-mail. My e-mail address is on the screen.
