Indonesia and other Asian countries were severely affected by the 1997/98 financial crisis, with Indonesia's public debt reaching over 93% of GDP. However, expanding domestic economic opportunities, investing in infrastructure, and reducing transaction costs can lead to recovery, growth, and ultimately lowering public debt as a percentage of GDP, as Indonesia demonstrated with its debt ratio falling to 25.5% by 2010.
