Rizal cannot be considered ignorant as alleged by Fr. Rodriguez, since he was well-educated in Spanish and received scholastic honors. In the Noli Me Tangere, Rizal did not attack the church or Spain itself, but rather criticized corrupt Spanish officials and friars, not the institutions. Fr. Rodriguez claimed reading the novel was a mortal sin, but since he read it himself, he too must have committed the same sin according to his own standard.

Fr. Rodriguez said that those who read the Noli me Tangere commented a
mortal sin . Since he ( fr. Rodriguez had read the novel therefore he also
commented a mortal sin.
