Rizal visited the United States in 1888, arriving in San Francisco on April 28th. He was surprised to find all passengers quarantined due to an alleged cholera outbreak in the Far East, even though there was no actual outbreak. After a week, first class passengers like Rizal were allowed to disembark, but others remained on the ship. Rizal stayed at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco and traveled across the country by train, seeing places like Sacramento, Reno, Utah, Colorado, Omaha, and Chicago along the way. He spent three days in New York before departing for London from Liverpool, forming impressions of America's material and economic progress as well as its racial prejudices and
