2. Risk is the possibility of something bad happening. It also involves
uncertainty about the effects and implications of an activity with
respect to something that humans value (such as health, well-being,
wealth, property or the environment), often focusing on negative,
undesirable consequences.
WHAT IS RISK?
RISK TERMINOLOGY INCLUDES:
ASSET
THREAT
VULNERABILITIES
3. THREATS
An asset is any data, device or other component of an organization’s
systems that is valuable – often because it contains sensitive data or
can be used to access such information.
For example, an employee’s desktop computer, laptop or company
phone would be considered an asset, as would applications on those
devices. Likewise, critical infrastructure, such as servers and support
systems, are assets.
ASSET
A threat is any incident that could negatively affect an asset – for
example, if it’s lost, knocked offline or accessed by an
unauthorized party.
Threats can be categorized as circumstances that compromise the
confidentiality, integrity or availability of an asset, and can either be
intentional or accidental.
4. A vulnerability is an organizational flaw that can be exploited by a
threat to destroy, damage or compromise an asset.
You are most likely to encounter a vulnerability in your software, due
to their complexity and the frequency with which they are updated.
These weaknesses, known as bugs, can be used by criminal hackers
to access to sensitive information.
VULNERABILITIES
RISK UNCERTAINTY
Risk and uncertainty are similar in that both present the problem of
not knowing what future conditions will be.
Risk offers estimates of probabilities for possible outcomes
Risk is measurable uncertainty.
Uncertainty does not provide estimates of probabilities for possible
outcomes.
Uncertainty is unmeasurable risk.
5. PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLES
The precautionary principle is an approach to decision- making that is
used when scientific evidence about an environmental or human health
hazard is uncertain and the stakes are high. It enables decision-makers
to adopt precautionary measures to address potential risks to the public
or environment associated with certain activities or policies
The principle has three specific principles:
1. The fullest possible scientific evaluation, the determination, as far as
possible, of the degree of scientific uncertainty.
2. A risk evaluation and an evaluation of the potential consequences of
inaction
3. The participation of all interested parties in the study of precautionary
measures, once the results of the scientific evaluation and/or the risk
evaluation are available.
6. The application of the precautionary principle presents many
opportunities as well as challenges. It is closely linked to
governance, which has three aspects: risk governance (risk
assessment, management and communication), science- policy
interfaces and the link between precaution and innovation
