Rigid structures with good joint sealants that are hard but flexible can function as dilators to reduce horizontal forces on the rigid structure. If the joint sealant is not hard, it will change the rigidity and could result in fractures. The smallest risk is that the joint becomes a passage for water, carrying material and causing erosion.
