Major floods in 1981, 1991, 1997, and most severely in 2007 destroyed collections and required rebuilding efforts. The 2007 flood was declared a federal disaster and inundated the library's entire basement, destroying equipment and collections stored below ground and disrupting library services. Recovery required over a year of construction and coordination between library staff, contractors, insurance, and FEMA to rebuild and restore operations.
