A wildfire in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta transformed into a massive blaze on August 21, 2003, burning 20,000 hectares of land. The fire caused tourism in the area to plummet as the forest was destroyed. However, Spray Lake Sawmills benefited from their 28% annual salvage rights to burned timberlands, clearing away dead trees to make room for new undergrowth to grow back over time, restoring diversity to the burned area.
