A seasonal wildfire in August 2003 abruptly changed direction, growing into a massive out of control blaze. The 6km tall wall of flames released as much energy as an atomic bomb every 30 minutes. A homeowner was evacuated and watched in horror as the flames approached, unable to look away from the mesmerizing fire. The blaze ultimately burned over 20,000 hectares and impacted the local timber industry, businesses, and tourism. However, efforts are being made to salvage and utilize still-standing burned wood and create new diversity and growth from the affected area.
