1) Magnesium sulfate is the drug of choice for treating eclampsia but the standard Pritchard regimen was designed for Western patients and may provide an excessive dose for Indian women who have lower average body weight.
2) Several studies have explored lower dose regimens of magnesium sulfate in India and found them to be as effective as the standard regimen with fewer side effects due to toxicity.
3) However, large randomized controlled trials are still needed to provide definitive evidence on the safety and efficacy of low dose regimens compared to the standard Pritchard regimen before widespread adoption. The results of a recent multicenter RCT in India may provide further guidance on optimal magnesium sulfate dosing.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

Annual Global Health Conference | Chicago, IL | March 8 – 10, 2019
October 4, 2018
Dear Colleague,
The Consortium of Universities for Global Health’s annual conference now attracts over 1,800 people
from 55 countries every year. We received more than 1,100 abstract submissions, and nearly 100
proposals for symposia for the 2019 conference in Chicago. Adjudicating these is a very big job and
cannot be done without your participation in the Scientific Program Advisory Committee (SPAC).
I want to thank you very much for being a part of the SPAC and in doing so, lending your time and
expertise to help identify abstracts and panels from a large pool of outstanding submissions. I am
acutely aware that you are a very busy person and so I am particularly grateful for the time you took
to help us build our program.
In these unstable times, global health stands as a common platform upon which individuals from
different nations and disciplines can come together to share knowledge and build collaborations that
can implement solutions to address some of the compelling challenges we face. Our conference is a
must attend event for those of us who are committed to improving health outcomes and building a
healthier planet for all.
We look forward to seeing you at our meeting next March where you will be able to see your efforts
come alive. Thank you again for helping us to make this happen.
Best wishes,
Keith Martin, MD
