This facility provided support to a number of research groups at UCSD, with the total client base
exceeding 1000 users. This includes building and maintaining the servers and infrastructure for
environments of varying complexity. Operating systems supported include; Solaris, Irix, Linux
(primarily CentOS), and Windows. Aside from direct support to the independent research groups, the
facility also provided centralized services, including mail services (Sendmail and Exchange), DNS,
security (intrusion detection and firewalls), support of computational and biochemical software
(MSIInsight II, Matlab, Maple, Mathematica), and development environments. The data serving
environment was Sybase (ASE) on Solaris. This facility also supported a number of Linux clusters
using ROCKS (www.rocksclusters.org).

Provided systems management and engineering support for internet business products. Managed two
teams of engineers dedicated to these projects. This included building and maintaining the servers and
infrastructure for development and production environments. These products are live and must be
available twentyfour hours every day. The primary OS for the application and web serving aspect was
Solaris on Sun hardware. The data servers were of two flavors; Oracle on Sun and Oracle on Tru64
(CompaqAlpha). The data servers were fully clustered, highly available resources. External storage is
provided via fiber channel to EMC Symmetrix frames.

Complete management of information services at the UCSD Cancer Center. This included full
infrastructure, research computing, and data service support. The focus during this period was to create
a more professional information technology support team. We were successful in achieving this goal in
that late in 2000 the UCSD Cancer Center achieved its comprehensive designation from the NIH.

Administrated all aspects of computing systems and network support for the Department of
Mathematics. This included installation and maintenance of a wide variety of platforms and operating
systems. Operating systems include: Solaris, Digital UNIX, Irix, Linux, FreeBSD, and Windows.
Duties include: all user accounts and network security, installation and maintenance of all system and
application software, planning and installation of all network software and hardware, development and
maintenance of department web site, email services (sendmail), development and maintenance of video
distribution system (Mbone and RealVideo), and installation and maintenance of compiler suites.
Department databases were maintained by our group, University specific data was queried from UCSD
central financial databases. The facility oversaw the implementation of new laboratories dedicated to
computational mathematics and in providing faculty and graduate students access to state of the art
computing environments.

Developed programs for processing time series data from ocean sensors; these were essentially spectral
analysis routines that provided energy, waveheight, period and direction information for CDIP
(Coastal Data Information Project). Supported application software developed for Coastal Data
Information Program publications and remote user access. Installed and modified software under a
variety of platforms, including: Suns, Macs, and assorted PCs. This position required experience with
graphical and statistical analysis techniques, especially pertaining to time series analysis in both
frequency and time domain. In accordance with the system administrator new revisions of the
operating system, and compilers were installed on Sun systems. The primary operating environment
was Solaris.
