Jerrod Van Oudenhoven is pursuing two bachelor's degrees in urban studies and urban geography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with a minor in architecture and a certificate in urban planning. He developed an early interest in architecture from trips across the country with his father. His goals are to create sustainable and eco-friendly urban spaces that benefit both cities and landscapes. He has work experience in campus outreach and retail, and coursework covering urban planning, design, and environmental impacts.

My father, who I credit with instilling this interest, was a truck driver who often took me on road trips across the country. I was exposed to vast landscapes that many my age could only dream about. During these expeditions I spent my time memorizing maps and interstates, acting as my father’s right hand man as we navigated our way around the country. By the time I was in second grade I had been to over thirty states, could name every capital, and even direct you to Orlando by memory. Many people can’t pinpoint the time in their life when they knew what they wanted to do, but at that young age, I wanted to be an architect. That ambition carried me to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.<br />Over the past few years my primary focus of architecture expanded into wealth of knowledge covering almost every aspect of urban form. I’m currently pursuing two bachelor degrees in both urban studies and urban geography, with a minor in architecture and a certificate in urban planning. I felt this provided me with the widest and most valuable skill set for a future career in planning and design. At this point in my life, my greatest interests are eco-friendly sites and sustainable resources. Some of my major influences are comprehensive planning of early American and European cities, contemporary landscape architecture, the picturesque movement of the mid 18th century, Grandeur planning principles, and of course green technologies.<br />In my opinion, the biggest problem with the built environment is the effects it has on the surrounding landscape. In the future, if I could take a diluted site and turn it into a sustainable, eco-friendly green space that encourages development and benefits the central city and surrounding landscape, I would be achieving my career goals. Because the city is a manipulation and unnatural, issues need to be approached differently in order to live properly.
