Multiplex Assays in Translational Medicine: Technologies, Applications, and F...ReportLinker.com
The development and growth of assay technologies has pushed translational medicine into a category unto itself. In a broad perspective on this field, this new report:Defines translational medicine by giving some historical background as well as providing personal definitions from experts in the field Discusses the evolution of assay technologies Reviews currently available assay technologies that apply directly to translational medicine Describes and evaluates current applications of these technologies Provides case studies of clinicians currently using this technology in their research Discusses future directions of assay technologies for translational medicine Gives input from the FDA on translation medicine and assay technologies Provides interviews from experts in the field of both translational medicine and specific assay technologies Profiles premier companies active in the field Assay technologies have been evolving since scientists first discovered they could measure glucose, insulin, and several hormones in the blood to help them diagnose disease. Early instruments such as the Ames Reflectance Meter, used for detecting glucose levels, have morphed into such sophisticated systems as flow cytometers. The Human Genome Project provided the basics for researchers to launch into the field of human genomics and they needed the tools to accomplish this. DNA microarrays allowed for massively parallel gene expression analyses. Scientists soon discovered that while the genomewide assays were extremely valuable, there were genes of interest that they had difficulty measuring when they got hundreds of data points from a microarray. Low- to mid-density assays have allowed scientists to pinpoint the genetic code for a variety of uses, from genetic heredity studies to drug metabolism and patient stratification.
Real-World Evidence: The Future of Data Generation and UsageApril Bright
As data is captured through electronic health records, registries and unique device identifiers, the generation of evidence based on this data is expected to play a crucial role in informing orthopedic manufacturers’ decisions before and after regulatory approval. While regulators, payors, hospitals and manufacturers support this shift, they acknowledge that gaps remain in its optimal execution. Priority considerations include how to generate evidence to expedite regulatory market decisions, device indication expansion, postmarket studies, postmarket surveillance and reimbursement decisions. The National Evaluation System for health Technology Coordinating Center (NESTcc), an initiative of the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC), is leading the conversation with various stakeholders, including FDA and orthopedic device companies to support the sustainable generation of Real-World Evidence (RWE) using Real-World Data (RWD).

During the past 35 years, ultrasound and nuclear medicine were introduced into clinical
medicine, computed tomography (CT) revolutionized diagnostic procedures and magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) emerged, bringing new diagnostic information at the cellular level. X-
ray morphed from analog films to digital, and virtually all medical images became "soft" files on
the electronic networks. As imaging departments in healthcare facilities have migrated from film
to digital, the display and storage systems have had to migrate too. These new digital imaging
storage and display systems are called picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).
Most PACS handle images from various medical imaging instruments, including ultrasound, MRI,
positron emission tomography (PET), CT, endoscopy, mammograms, etc. The focus of this
TriMark Publications report is to analyze and describe the PACS market segments. PACS market
penetration in the U.S. healthcare space has been significant, at almost 90%. A PACS network
typically consists of a central server that stores a database containing the images connected to
one or more clients via a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN) that provides
or utilizes the images. More and more PACS utilize Internet-based technologies as their means
of communication. This allows remote viewing and diagnosis with implications for both civilian
and military healthcare facilities. Since radiology departments dominate the production of
images, interconnections with radiology information systems (RIS) are also looked at in this
study.
