VICTORIA Country coach
Peter Knights has praised the
commitment of Geelong’s four
state representatives, saying
each would play a vital role in
the match against the VAFA
tomorrow.
Dane McFarlane, James
Linton, Jeremy Larcombe and
Rob Condy were all named
yesterday in the team to play
at Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth
Oval.
Knights said before the
campaign Linton was the only
one of the quartet he had met,
but admitted they had all
made a mark since the initial
squad was announced.
“They all got through
training last night or are
available and will play key
roles in our game,” he said.
“James Linton was the only
one that I knew because he
played in this team two years
ago.
“He was a boy with great
talent, great development
potential, and I just look at
him two years down the track,
look at his maturity and I look
forward to him playing with us
again and probably
contributing even more than
Quartet
impress
Knights
he did a couple of years ago as
a debutant.”
Larcombe, who has been
instrumental down back for
Leopold, will have a similar job
on the weekend.
“Jeremy gets the
opportunity to be a key player
in that very, very specialist
position of fullback and I’ve
got a lot of confidence in him
that he’ll do a very good job for
us,” Knights said.
Newtown & Chilwell duo
Condy and McFarlane were
also new to Knights, and while
they displayed different traits,
he said both would be
expected to have an impact on
the game.
“Rob has been so
impressive right throughout
our whole program and to me
shows definite leadership
qualities and I’m sure we’ll get
that out of him,” he said.
“I see him as being a
valuable member of our
defensive line.
“With Dane, potentially
he’s got a very bright future as
an outside midfielder and we’ll
be looking for him to play that
role as well.”
Victoria Country will be
looking to reverse its fortunes
from last season, when it fell to
Vic Metro by 38 points.

THE Geelong Falcons will
welcome back TAC Cup
royalty for Sunday’s clash
against ladder-leading North
Ballarat Rebels
First-round draft prospects
Darcy Parish and Rhys
Mathieson are confirmed
starters, fresh from their
dominant performances in Vic
Country’s unbeaten national
under-18 carnival.
The pair both earned
selection in the under-18 All-
Australian side for the second
year running, a rare feat in
under-age football.
They are the first Falcons
players to do so since Jimmy
Bartel completed the feat in
2000 and 2001.
Fellow Vic Country
teammate Tom Doedee pulled
up sore and will miss out,
taking into consideration next
weekend’s bye to give him
extra rest.
North Ballarat’s only loss
this season came against the
Falcons, setting the scene for a
fierce encounter after Geelong
recorded its second draw in
three matches last weekend.
“I’ve got no doubt it will be
close,” Falcons coach Andy
Allthorpe said yesterday.
“It’s going to be a tough
game, obviously the rivalry is
there, obviously we’re
desperate for a win at this
stage of the year, so it’s going
to be a ripper.”
Charlie Curnow, sidelined
with a knee problem, was
running and kicking at
training on Tuesday.
Kieren looks ahead but misses Joeys
KIEREN Paliouras admits to
being disappointed that he
won’t play finals with St Jo-
seph’s this year, but says he
has exceeded even his own ex-
pectations with the Geelong
VFL side in 2015.
Paliouras was a key player
in St Joseph’s run to the pre-
liminary final in 2014, but has
been a regular selection for the
Cats this season.
The midfielder will line up
for game 11 on Saturday
against Werribee in what is a
must-win encounter if Gee-
long is to play any part in fi-
nals action.
“It’s a bit shattering seeing
them (St Joseph’s) do well and
knowing you’re not going to
be a part of it but in saying that
I’m happy playing with Gee-
long and it is what we signed
up for at the start of the year,”
Paliouras said.
“Not at all did I expect to
play the first 10 games, so I’ve
definitely been surprised but
I’ve been happy with how the
year has gone for me.
“They just ask you to play
your role there so I suppose if
you just play consistent footy
and don’t stress about getting
kicks and handballs too much
and just play your role for the
team, that’s what they want
and that’s what I’ve been
doing.”
Paliouras acknowledged
there was plenty of excitement
around the club surrounding
Dan Menzel’s return on the
weekend, which will be the
second week a big name Cat
has played in the VFL.
Last week it was Brownlow
medallist Jimmy Bartel, some-
body Paliouras said fitted in
among his new teammates
with great ease.
“Jimmy’s a great guy, just a
normal, humble down-to-
earth fella and he just em-
braced playing with us,” he
said.
“It definitely wasn’t like it
was him and us, it was just one
team and he was really good
about it.”
