A central focus of Quarkus is developer joy and productivity. As part of this focus, Quarkus provides a powerful development mode which, among other things, allows true hot compilation of code. In this talk we will take a look at this feature in detail. Aside from allowing hot reloading locally, we can also configure our application to allow hot reloading remotely. For example, the application could be running in a docker container or on a kubernetes-/openshift-cluster. This improves Dev/Prod-parity and thus enhances the development lifecycle. Kubernetes as a platform is moving fast from being the "new IT" to standing right in the center of most companies infrastructure. What does that mean for IT Automation? For its own purposes, Kubernetes already comes with a well-engineered declarative model of managing computing resources that has proven to be very efficient. In classic IT, likewise proven automation solutions like Red Hat Ansible are established. This forms two automation silos, and as we all know: Silos are a bad thing. Is there a way to bridge this gap?
In this session we will highlight the possibilities to use Kubernetes state management as backbone for IT automation by extending it with custom operators using Red Hat Ansible. Ansible with its focus on idempotency is a really great match for implementing Kubernetes-Operators and doing it to automate non-K8s resources, just like you would do with Ansible Tower, is easier than you might think. We will have a look at different use cases and provide a strategic outlook.
Operator development made easy with helm
- Operators are applications that extend Kubernetes to manage complex stateful applications. They use custom resource definitions (CRDs) to configure and automate tasks.
- Helm is a good starting point for creating operators as it is widely used and easy to learn. Operators created with Helm can later be used to manage resources in other operators.
- The demo showed creating a Helm operator from a Nginx chart and combining two operators with ArgoCD to deploy example apps based on custom resources.
App Security with Keycloak and Quarkus

Kubernetes and Spot/Pre-emptible Instances (SPIs) are arguably a match made in heaven. Traditionally, the uncertainty of SPIs (they can be terminated at any time due to price fluctuations) have made managing them tricky, and restricted them to specific workloads and use cases.
Kubernetes, in contrast, not only handles node failure very well, it has trained developers and architects to design applications to tolerate and even embrace failure. The prospect of Kubernetes abstracting the complexities of SPIs is now a reality, enabling applications to take advantage of low-cost compute across different clouds and possibly vendors.
The purpose of this talk is to educate the audience on strategies for making the most out of this powerful combination. Specifically, we will discuss these topics:
1. What are spot bidding strategies, and what is their cost vs. predictability trade-off?
2. What class of Kubernetes applications would benefit the most from SPIs?
3. Available Kubernetes mechanisms (e.g taints/tolerations, affinity, availability zones) for placing applications based on their tolerance with SPIs

Kubernetes and Spot/Pre-emptible Instances (SPIs) are arguably a match made in heaven. Traditionally, the uncertainty of SPIs (they can be terminated at any time due to price fluctuations) have made managing them tricky, and restricted them to specific workloads and use cases.
Kubernetes, in contrast, not only handles node failure very well, it has trained developers and architects to design applications to tolerate and even embrace failure. The prospect of Kubernetes abstracting the complexities of SPIs is now a reality, enabling applications to take advantage of low-cost compute across different clouds and possibly vendors.
The purpose of this talk is to educate the audience on strategies for making the most out of this powerful combination. Specifically, we will discuss these topics:
1. What are spot bidding strategies, and what is their cost vs. predictability trade-off?
2. What class of Kubernetes applications would benefit the most from SPIs?
3. Available Kubernetes mechanisms (e.g taints/tolerations, affinity, availability zones) for placing applications based on their tolerance with SPIs
3. Implementation strategies (e.g. blending multiple autoscaling groups to satisfy both SPI-optimized applications vs. applications that are more mission-critical or stateful)
4. What out-of-the box solutions exist, either free or commercial?
5. How to take abstract away clouds from different regions and vendors, allowing workloads to always take advantage of the best available pricing?
The talk concludes with real-world test results involving multiple use cases and configurations, giving the audience an idea of the potential cost savings and trade-offs (if any) of combining Kubernetes and SPIs.

Quarkus - a next-generation Kubernetes Native Java framework
For years, the client-server architecture has been the de-facto standard to build applications. But a major shift happened. The one model rules them all age is over. A new range of applications and architectures has emerged and impacts how code is written and how applications are deployed and executed. HTTP microservices, reactive applications, message-driven microservices, and serverless are now central players in modern systems.
Quarkus has been designed with this new world in mind and provides first-class support for these different paradigms. Developers using the Red Hat build of Quarkus can now choose between deploying natively compiled code or JVM-based code depending on an application’s needs. Natively compiled Quarkus applications are extremely fast and memory-efficient, making Quarkus a great choice for serverless and high-density cloud deployments.

In distributed applications where the number of members in the cluster increases, the
separation of the consensus related operations at the hardware level is essential for the
following reasons:
1. At the operating system level, messages broadcast on the protocol stack cause latency.
2. It is necessary to increase the number of completed transactions in the communication of
distributed system components and on the network unit (throughput).
3. For devices with limited storage and CPU computing facilities that use embedded operating
systems such as IOT devices, it is also necessary to reduce the processing burden due to
"consensus" operations.
4. A common consensus communication model is needed for different applications that need
to work together in (BFT) distributed systems.
Predicting Space Weather with Docker
The document discusses how NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center transitioned from a monolithic architecture to microservices using Docker. It describes how they started with a small verification project, then replaced their critical GOES satellite data source. This improved developers' morale and delivery speed. SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
