Reflective cracking occurs when cracks in an existing pavement propagate up through a new bituminous overlay, bringing the same crack pattern up to the surface of the new overlay. When a pavement is overlaid with a bituminous layer, the same pattern of cracks as was in the existing pavement surface can propagate upwards and cover the top surface of the new overlay. This is called reflective cracking.
