We all know real-time data has a value. But how do you quantify that value in order to create a business case for becoming more data, or event, driven? The first half of this talk will explore the value of data across a variety of organizations, starting with the five most valuable companies in the world: Apple, Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook. We will go on to discuss other digital natives; Uber, Ebay, Netflix and LinkedIn before exploring more traditional companies across Retail, Finance and Automotive. Whether organizations are using data to create new business products and services, improving user experiences, increasing productivity, managing risk or influencing global power, we’ll see that fast and interconnected data, or ‘event streaming’ is increasingly important. After showing data value can be quantified, the second half of this talk will explain the five steps to creating a business case around Kafka use cases.
Most businesses focus on:
1. Making more money, or conferring competitive advantage to make more money
2. Increasing efficiency to save money, and / or
3. Mitigating risk to the business, to protect money.
We’ll walk through examples of real business cases, discuss how business cases have evolved over the years and show the power of a sound business case. If you’re interested in Big Money and Big Business, as well as Big Data, this talk is for you.

a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.

v1.1 #CS2000203 August, 2015
Introduction
The objective of this primer is to provide the reader with an understanding of how a leading
ice cream manufacturer used Nimble’s wireless temperature monitoring devices to reduce
wastage and thereby increased their ROI.
The Problem
A leading ice cream manufacturer and retailer in India was wasting nearly 20% of its
manufactured ice cream due to temperature failure. The company has more than 100+ plus
stores selling ice creams; each store has a cold room to store the ice cream and four/five
display freezers. When temperature fails in either one of the freezers, the store admin would
call the company’s support team who will send a technician to fix the issue. On an average,
the whole process of identifying the failure and attending the issue takes about 5 – 6 hours
However, the usual out-of-refrigeration limit for ice creams is less than an hour, beyond which
the ice cream starts melting. The melted ice cream crystallizes if frozen again and crystallized
ice cream is considered a wastage by the company as it reduces the taste of the ice cream.
Whereas, the admin notices a freezer failure only after the ice cream starts melting. Moreover,
by the time the admin informs about the freezer failure the ice cream would have melted,
and it will become inconsumable and considered a wastage. Worst case scenario, what if the
admin never notices that the freezer has failed or what if there is a power outage causing
temperature excursions.
In this way, the company was losing nearly 20% of the manufactured ice creams due to
temperature excursions.
When the company started looking for a solution to reduce wastage because of temperature
failure. They wanted a solution that can alert their managers automatically when there is
temperature failure. Most, of the devices the company came across, were wired devices. A
wired solution means, less mobility - they cannot move their display freezers based on their
sales strategy.
So, the company wanted a reliable and automated wireless temperature monitoring solution
that help them reduce wastage and also increase their ROI, in the long run.
4. Case Study - How an Ice Cream Retailer Reduced Wastage and Increased its ROI
v1.1 #CS2000203 August, 2015
The Solution
Nimble Wireless provided an end-to-end temperature monitoring solution to help the
company reduce wastage. Every freezer was fitted with a remote temperature monitoring
device that would wirelessly communicate with a cellular gateway placed inside the store. The
device will collect temperature data every 15 minutes and forward them to the mobile gateway
that then forwards the data through a cellular network to the IRIS cloud application.
The IRIS cloud application aggregates the data collected from all the stores and displays it on
a remote dashboard. The managers were given a secure login to access the dashboard. Using
the dashboard, the managers can have a birds eye on all the freezers across different stores.
In the case of a temperature failure, the device sends an SMS and email alert to the
corresponding manager/admin. The admin can now act swiftly and change the freezer or
move the stored ice creams to a different freezer. This way the company reduced it is wastage
of about .5%.
Increase in ROI
Let’s us assume the company was manufacturing US $500,000 worth of ice cream for a month
for one store. There are four display freezers and one cold room in each store, for calculation
purpose lets assume each of the freezers and the cold room is stocked with US $100,000
worth of ice creams. On permutation, basis lets assume each one of the freezers, fail twice
every year and the loss due to failure is 60%.
5. Case Study - How an Ice Cream Retailer Reduced Wastage and Increased its ROI
v1.1 #CS2000203 August, 2015
ROI Calculation
The cost of total ice cream per month = US $500,000
The cost of ice cream per freezer = US $100,000
The cost per year – 500,000 x 12 = US $60,00,000
Loss percentage per freezer – 60% (US $60,000)
Permutation on total loss per yer = 2 times x 5 freezers = 10 times
So the total loss = loss percent x no. of times
- 60,000 x 10 = 600,000
Loss percentage on a yearly basis – 10% of total production
On installing the device to monitor temperature. The loss is reduced to less than .5% that is
US $30,000 per year.
*All calculations in US $
With the cost of installing and maintaining the device being less than 20% of the total loss.
The company got nearly 300% ROI within a year of implementing Nimble’s temperature
monitoring solution.

Nimble’s Temperature Monitoring Solution
Nimble provides both hardware and software needed for reliable temperature monitoring
thus providing a complete end-to-end solution. Unlike other products Nimble’s devices are
truly wireless, the devices can run on both battery and power, the devices use Zigbee and the
cellular network to communicate temperature data. With the built-in battery, the devices send
temperature data even during a power outage, which is the at most needed time to monitor
temperature.
