The Cartesian coordinate system consists of two perpendicular number lines that intersect at the origin and form four regions called quadrants. It was created by the French mathematician Rene Descartes. Points on the plane are represented by ordered pairs (x, y), where x is the point's position on the horizontal x-axis and y is its position on the vertical y-axis. Several example points are given along with their coordinates and quadrants.
