City Hall Fellows is a non-partisan nonprofit founded in 2007 with a mission to empower young people to solve local problems through public service careers in local government. The fellowship program places cohorts of fellows in paid, full-time positions in city administrations for one year. Fellows receive hands-on work experience, leadership training, and networking opportunities through placements in city departments and a civic leadership development program including meetings with local officials and community leaders. The founder, Bethany Rubin Henderson, established the program after her own experience in government fellowship programs. City Hall Fellows began in Houston and San Francisco in 2008 and has since expanded to other cities.

He also leads a unit that provides technical assistance and capacity building guidance to the Urban League's 98 affiliates across the country. Additionally, Cy conducts research on factors that boost or block building wealth in communities of color.
In Decatur It Starts with a Conversation
The city of Decatur, Georgia has engaged over 1,000 residents in addressing challenges through initiatives like the Decatur Round Tables and Better Together advisory board. These initiatives utilize dialogue processes influenced by Everyday Democracy to bring together diverse stakeholders. By having open discussions around issues like affordable housing, racial equity, and community-police relations, Decatur has been able to develop inclusive 10-year strategic plans that have wide community support. The Better Together initiative generated over 600 ideas at a community event in 2017 to develop strategies around increasing volunteers, housing, and building trust with police.

The City of Huntsville launched a 18-month master urban planning initiative called The BIG Picture to shape the city's future for decades. They engaged citizens for feedback through surveys, focus groups, and an online community called Imagine Huntsville. The city collected demographic data and promoted engagement through various online and offline channels. So far, the initiative has validated existing plans, identified new issues, informed daily team meetings, and helped educate citizens. The city plans to continue citizen engagement for future projects after The BIG Picture concludes.

Students worked with Lancaster City Council and local communities to understand citizen engagement in the area. They reported on reasons for participation in community initiatives and ways to improve the Council's support through less hierarchical communication, a timebank credit system, and cross-generational activities. The project provided insights into fostering participation and ideas for some of the Council's existing projects, though implementation of all ideas was limited by the 10 week timeframe. The Council found the broad overview from students valuable for informing future engagement strategies.

Greensboro Public Art Funding Presentation final

Greensboro Public Art Funding Presentation final

Sizwe Mxobo Profile
Sizwe Mxobo has worked as a community planner since 2011, facilitating informal settlement upgrading projects in Cape Town. Some of his accomplishments include managing the re-blocking of over 100 structures in Flamingo Crescent to provide each household with a flush toilet and tap, and re-blocking 22 structures in Kukutown. He advocates for the urban poor and facilitates workshops between communities and university students. Sizwe believes planning should focus on meaningful community co-design and that his work shows how planners can and should work directly with communities.
