DOES15 - Mirco Hering - Adopting DevOps Practices for Systems of Record – An ...Gene Kim
Mirco Hering, Agile & DevOps Lead, Accenture
Systems of record are often seen as especially difficult to deal with in regards to Agile adoption and DevOps practices. But is that a reason to avoid them? Unfortunately often people don’t talk about the messy work that is required to make these systems work in an Agile environment, it looks so much cleaner with web applications or your custom Java application. Let’s get our hands dirty together in this talk.
I will show you that once you drill open the COTS and Enterprise systems you will be surprised to find common ground, that allows you to deal with these systems in a very similar way to your custom development applications. I work with enterprise grade applications (for example Siebel, Mainframe) all the time and I want to share with you what you can do to make your COTS and Enterprise systems work better in an Agile environment. I provide tangible examples from Siebel and Mainframe to illustrate how you can solve some of the problems and will also share some of the areas that I have failed in so far.

The most important thing about API Design is for API developers (and product managers, additional stakeholders) to have empathy for API consumers to create the best Developer Experience possible which is technically critical and key to adoption as a business driver.
This approach means that the API specification, the contract between the API provider and API consumer, serves as the core of the design and experience.

Agent-Based Modeling
A web-based, general-purpose simulation and modeling tool is presented in this paper. The
tool, Insight Maker, has been designed to make modeling and simulation accessible to a
wider audience of users. Insight Maker integrates three general modeling approaches –
System Dynamics, Agent-Based Modeling, and imperative programming – in a unified
modeling framework. The environment provides a graphical model construction interface
that is implemented purely in client-side code that runs on users’ machines. Advanced fea-
tures, such as model scripting and an optimization tool, are also described. Insight Maker,
under development for several years, has gained significant adoption with currently more
than 20,000 registered users. In addition to detailing the tool and its guiding philosophy,
this first paper on Insight Maker describes lessons learned from the development of a com-
plex web-based simulation and modeling tool.

1. Introduction
The field of modeling and simulation tools is diverse and emergent. General-purpose modeling tools (e.g. MATLAB’s
Simulink or the Modelica language [1]) sit beside highly focused and domain-specific applications (e.g. [2] for modeling
network control systems, [3] for simulating the behavior of wireless network routing protocols, or [4] for the simulation
and control of turbines). Interest in and published works on such tools has grown over time. The ISI Web of Knowledge
reports a substantial growth in papers published on modeling or simulation tools with 299 such papers published in the span
of 1985–1989, 1482 published from 1995 to 1999, and 3727 published from 2005 to 2009.1
For end-users, simulation and modeling tools are generally designed as executables to be run on a consumer operating
system such as W.

Modeling Software Systems in Experimental Robotics for Improved ReproducibilityFlorian Lier
Research on robot systems either integrating a large number of capabilities in a single architecture or displaying outstanding performance in a single domain achieved considerable progress over the last years. Results are typically validated through experimental evaluation or demonstrated live, e.g., at robotics competitions. Common robot hardware, simulation and programming platforms such as the iCub ecosystem yield a vastly improved basis for comparable research. Despite this progress, many of the described experiments still cannot be easily reproduced by interested researchers to confirm the reported findings. We consider this a critical challenge for experimental robotics.
We address this problem in our work by introducing an integrated approach facilitating the reproduction of robotics experiments. We identify major obstacles to experiment replication and introduce an integrated approach that allows aggregation and discovery of required research artifacts, automated build and deployment of required system components, as well as experiment description, repeatable execution and evaluation.
We explain the usage of the introduced process through replication of an exemplary robotics experiment using the iCub humanoid robot.

Multi Task DPP for Basket Completion by Romain WARLOP, Fifty Fiverecsysfr
Determinantal point processes (DPPs) have received significant attention in the recent years as an elegant model for a variety of machine learning tasks, due to their ability to elegantly model set diversity and item quality or popularity. Recent work has shown that DPPs can be effective models for product recommendation and basket completion tasks. We present an enhanced DPP model that is specialized for the task of basket completion, the multi-task DPP. We view the basket completion problem as a multi-class classification problem, and leverage ideas from tensor factorization and multi-class classification to design the multi-task DPP model. We evaluate our model on several real-world datasets, and find that the multi-task DPP provides significantly better predictive quality than a number of state-of-the-art models.
Building a recommender system with Annoy and Word2Vec by Cristian PEREZ, Kern...recsysfr
The Kernix Lab will talk about the development of a recommender engine at the RecSys MeetUp. We will discuss both strategic and technical considerations for a production ready system. Technically, how we handle cold start, misspelled words and content high renewal rates will be shared.
Artem Kozhevnikov, lead Data Scientist, will present some quality metrics commonly followed @ tinyclues in order to evaluate the model predictive power. Those metrics are going beyond well known technical metrics like AUC or RMSE and seem to be important in the context of CRM campaigns targeting.
