The Brazilian government has opened a new factory to produce condoms made from latex harvested from trees in the Amazon rainforest. The factory aims to help preserve the rainforest while also making Brazil less dependent on condom imports. It will produce 100 million condoms annually, providing jobs and income for local families living near the protected Chico Mendes reserve. The condoms will be the only ones in the world made from latex harvested in a tropical forest.
