Race Questions
1. FYS September 4, 2015
1. The neighborhood that I grew up in was not racially diverse at all. It was
predominantly white with very few minorities. The minorities that we had were
mostly adopted children with Caucasian parents. The city I am from only has only
about 5,000 people.
2. The messaged I have received from my family and friends is to treat everyone
equally and that a personās character is not judged by the color of their skin. My
parents have always made sure that I grew up in a manner to respect everyone,
regardless of race, gender, religion, or any other difference that we may have. In
the high school that I graduated from, there really was not a specific message
about race. Like I stated earlier, only about 5-10% of my school was another
minority other than Caucasian. There were never issues are regarding race and if
there were they were kept quiet. Race was never spoken about because it was
not something that was common in my community.
3. Honestly, race hasnāt shaped my life drastically. Living in Huntington these past 3
weeks, I have seen the most racial diversity I have ever seen in my entire life.
Growing up, race was not an issue that was widely discussed.
