Fresno State University Theatre presents RACE

Is the law Black & White?
Set in a lawyer’s office, the play concerns a racially charged rape case and the three
attorneys, two black and one white, who must grapple with their own attitudes about race
while deciding whether to take the case.
Race premiered on Broadway in 2009. Directed by Mamet, the cast included James
Spader, Kerry Washington, Richard Thomas and David Alan Grier who was nominated
for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play.
David Mamet, the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, is one of the most
important voices in contemporary American Theatre. His best known plays include
Glengarry Glen Ross, Oleanna, and Speed the Plow. He also received Oscar nominations
for his screenplays for The Verdict and Wag the Dog.
The student cast of the University Theatre production of Race include faces well known
to the Fresno community, including Ryan Woods, an American College Theatre Irene
Ryan National Finalist in 2013, who appeared in Othello last spring, and Breayre Tender,
who has also appeared in Clybourne Park for University Theatre in 2013.
