Analysis of the important frames...
Here is the name of our production company ‘Lucid Dreams’. The term Lucid meaning something clear/ direct or easily understood, co-linked with word Dreams to represent the abnormality of hallucination and episodes of schizophrenic attacks. As the smoke ‘brushes’ the text onto the screen the lettering becomes more sharp and pronounced. This gives the idea that the smoke leaves a trace behind, possibly as even a clue for the dynamics of the narrative. We used adobe After Effects to develop it with the addition of a sound effect from http://www.sounddogs.com. It immediately shows the thriller to be part of the genre as the ‘puff of smoke’ effect creates an atmosphere of mystery. After this frame the audience is thrown directly into the hands of the mise-en-scene used here to establish the begging of a normal day in the lifestyle of the character ‘Grace’. So therefore it compliments as a foreground for the times in the movie when she is not affected by mental disorder. We used B&W as it added a mysterious effect to the shots making them more mentally rather than aesthetically focused, as we are blocking out all the natural distraction in colour from the audience member. Abstract shots like these where used to she was not necessarily alone, as in watched by something / someone. It is under the perception that the audience itself is watching ‘Grace’ but this is not something you would expect in this genre it is usually made clear and direct what is ‘threatening’ the protagonist but it is up to the audience to figure out how and why.
A graveyard commonly used in thriller movies to represent spiritual danger or communication with spirits whether good or bad; such as ghosts or visions. When deciding setting in pre-production the thought of a graveyard helped develop our film title 'wraith' as it means ghostlike presence. The effect used here is ‘addictive dissolve’ is was used to initiate the beginning of the build of the episode ‘Grace’ was facing. The effect was also used to compliment the non-diegetic voiceover which began to intensify which an amalgamation of voices becoming thicker and louder, but the audience does no know here this sound is coming from so it is shocking, creating enigma. Definition: — n 1. the apparition of a person living or thought to be alive, supposed to appear around the time of his death 2. a ghost or any apparition 3. an insubstantial copy of something 4. something pale, thin, and lacking in substance, such as a column of smoke http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/wraith Titles of movies in the thriller genre are often as direct and forward as ours relating entirely to the narrative/ characters or even mise-en-scene within the production. ,[object Object]
‘Kill Bill’-the protagonists had intention to seek revenge on her attacker ‘Bill’ even if this meant his death.,[object Object]
