Internet of Things (IoT) is the digital skin of the physical world. It has specific requirements such as dynamicity to self-adapt to the continuously changing physical context. The world is heterogeneous and the objects should interoperate to collaborate, thus interoperability is essential. Openness and short learning curve are other requirements so that innovators (e.g. startups) can rapidly build applications with reduced time-to-market and avoid vendor lock-in. Reuse of software and hardware is also particularly important since billion of devices are expected to be deployed in the coming decades and those devices should be multi-purpose and reusable by applications from different domains and not be specific to a given domain.
OSGi has – since 15 years ago – the answers to those requirements of today’s IoT. Its powerful run-time environment for the dynamicity, its service-oriented approach hiding heterogeneity, its modularity making the reuse extremely simple, and last but not least, its open approach giving the potential to democratize the IoT.
The talk will illustrate the benefits of OSGi for IoT with concrete deployed examples, in particular in smart city domain in Europe and Japan via the collaborative projects such as ClouT and FESTIVAL.

Roland Memisevic at AI Frontiers: Common sense video understanding at TwentyBNAI Frontiers
Deep learning has evolved not linearly but through a series of step-functions: sudden unexpected outbreaks of capability, which fundamentally changed the envelope of what computers are able to do. At TwentyBN, we have created spatio-temporal video models and data infrastructure that allowed us to grow approximately one million labeled videos showing everyday common-sense scenes and situations - many of them extremely subtle. This allowed us to successfully train neural networks end-to-end on a wide range of action understanding tasks, that neither hand-engineering nor neural networks had appeared anywhere near solving just a few months ago. I will show how these recognition tasks now drive commercial value at TwentyBN, and how they drive our long-term AI agenda for learning common sense world knowledge through video.

The Quantified Self, the process of measuring, logging and usually sharing metrics related to your health and fitness over a period of time, in most cases, by using one or more sensing devices. Aiming for behavioural change like staying fit or losing weight.
Other use cases include tracking blood sugar levels, pulse or heart rate blurring the boundaries between recreational fitness and healthcare.
Once data has been collected, transmitted, and processed, it can be brought into a Sensor data platform (also called "Sensor Web") for making applications from real-time data sources, either directly or via API. This forms a new category of web service to integrate data flows from different IOT quantified sensor devices, web services, and social networking activity.
The resulting paradigm, named Social Internet of Things (SIoT), has great potential to support novel applications for Human and Machine to Machine (M2M) Connectivity.
This session provides an overview of popular data platforms, APIs, fitness and IoT Communities plus a live demo of selected devices by the audience.

Single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi are cheap, small, and cute, but they have also shown that they are powerful enough to drive interesting ideas at a fraction of the cost of other, more “traditional” hardware solutions. This session covers how Java ME and Java SE technologies can power solutions for managing open spaces (such as museums, department stores, hypermarkets, airports, train stations, and offices) in a cost-effective manner. Combining Java, the Raspberry Pi, and Bluetooth LE and other sensors makes it easy to build a platform to track personal devices as they are carried through an area and analyze movement patterns, hot zones, and real-time 3-D information to help drive better visitor/customer/user interactions.

This presentation introduces OpenVX, a new application programming interface (API) from the Khronos Group. OpenVX enables performance and power optimized vision algorithms for use cases such as face, body and gesture tracking, smart video surveillance, automatic driver assistance systems, object and scene reconstruction, augmented reality, visual inspection, robotics and more.
OpenVX enables significant implementation innovation while maintaining a consistent API for developers. OpenVX can be used directly by applications or to accelerate higher-level middleware with platform portability. OpenVX complements the popular OpenCV open source vision library that is often used for application prototyping.

Physikal - Using Kotlin for Clean Energy - KUG MunichWerner Keil
Tenkiv developed a new kind of solar power system focused on cost-effectiveness and scalability in need of data acquisition system to collect and analyze data from different sensors throughout the cloud. Because the system may have different energy conversion devices (modules), different number of thermal circuits, collectors, etc. the control software has to be very adaptable to match these varying configurations.
Therefore the JVM was an ideal choice. The control software "Nexus Brain" is written in Kotlin. It heavily uses Units of Measurement, so Tenkiv created Physikal, a Kotlin extension to the Java 8 implementation of JSR 363. A project also used by others, for example in collaboration with NASA or ETH Zurich.
This session will give a brief overview of how Tenkiv and Nexus Brain use Kotlin and Physikal/JSR 363 to calculate the optimal usage of alternate energy sources and control solar power systems for making clean water anywhere from Flint Michigan to Afghanistan or Cape Town.

Performance Monitoring tools like Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) existed almost longer than the World Wide Web. It was developed in the early 90s by SGI. Parts were made available open source from 2000 on, which led to a further spread of the tool. In recent years an active community formed and a variety of new features and enhancements were added. PCP is now part of Red Hat and SuSE Linux Enterprise editions and included in many other Linux distributions. Versions for other Unix variants, OS X and Windows also exist. This session compares popular Open Source Monitoring Tools like Performance Co-Pilot, StatsD, Dropwizard Metrics, Prometeus, MicroProfile Metrics or StatsD. How they each support Containers or Virtualization, share data with IT monitoring systems like Nagios or Zabbix, or process analyze and visualize it via Carbon, Graphite or Grafana/ElasticSerch.
With IoT it’s all about things and sensors. And when representing a temperature, for example, we normally have it as a float. But is this float in Celsius? Kelvin? This is one of the problems JSR 363 wants to solve: have all “real world” value and unit data represented in a standard way. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
