COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY ESSAY

In order to gain an international perspective and learn more about the West’s culture, after my

11th grade in Vietnam, I decided to enroll in a cultural exchange program in the U.S. Living with a local

family and going to high school in the U.S. East Coast (I went to a small private high school in New

Hampshire), I absorbed U.S. culture, both high and popular culture.

However, after graduating from high school in the U.S., I realized there is one more aspect of life

that I need to enrich myself. That is social experience. I took a year off from school to volunteer, travel

and work. After coming back from the U.S., with the hope of sharing what I learned from my journey in

America to people from my hometown, I decided to help at a local English speaking club. I was

volunteering as a MC, facilitating discussions, assisting young Vietnamese college students with their

English speaking skill and sharing them my stories from the trip to America.

I worked as a waiter in a Japanese restaurant and after two months of learning how a restaurant

business attract, retain and serve customers, I switched to another job: commercial tourist driver. This

job was heavily challenging for a young driver like me at the time. As a duty of a “long-distance cab

driver,” I was required to drive long hours every day on Vietnam’s poor highways and road conditions.

However, thanks to the job, I had opportunities to learn from experienced tour guides and gained a deep

understanding about how the tourist companies generate revenue. After doing the two jobs, I gained

insights into both food and beverage and tourism industries. More importantly, through putting myself

in these positions, I also stood a golden chance to meet new people and hone my communication skill. I

met with a lot of people who are from low class and have to deal with economic disadvantage. I

realized if I could open myself up to those people and get to know them, I could always benefit myself

by learn something from them. It is my strong belief that it does not matter who I meet, there is always

something unique to learn from him/her.

After a year off from school, I was ready to go to school again. Villanova University promised a

lot of thrilling experience. The exchange year in New Hampshire helped me a lot. Fluent in English

and understanding the U.S. culture, I made friends easily and surrounded myself with interesting and

brilliant people. I hanged out with not only U.S. students but also students from different background
like Indian, Chinese, and other minority groups. It is very hard to keep a diverse group of friends but

also interesting and worthwhile to have one. I learned about different cultures and practiced my

language skill (I studied Chinese during my year off from formal education).

Diversifying myself by learning, working and making friends pays off. But more importantly, I

enjoy doing it.
