Case study on Vulnerability and Marginalized Populations
How should public health professionals interact with families undergoing health crises?
How should public health professionals interact with the media in high profile cases?
How can understanding the experience of Louise Troh and her family help me become a better public health professional?
This week, instead of discussing a case study from your book, we are going to consider the experience of Louise Troh and her family. The goal is for you to work on your intellectual empathy give consideration to how you will interact with individuals who are vulnerable. Be sure to view the video news clips posted in this module for a sampling of the media coverage during the 2014 Ebola incident in Dallas.
Phase 1: Analyze Louise Troh's experience
In the first part of your discussion board, you will address several questions about the Louise Troh's memoir
My Spirit Took You In: The Romance that Sparked an Epidemic of Fear
. I’d like for each member of the team to
choose one question
to address.
Let your team know early in the week which question you will be answering.
1.
What characteristics of this family indicate that they are members of a vulnerable population?
2.
What stood out to you in Louise’s descriptions of Liberian culture?
3.
What stood out to you in Louise’s description of her experience as an immigrant adapting to a new culture?
4.
How did Louise’s employment and experience as a certified nurse’s aide impact her response to Mr. Duncan’s illness and hospitalization? Do you think she acted appropriately? Why or why not?
5.
Describe the role of the individual public health professionals who interacted with this family. In what ways did they do a good job? What could they have done better?
6.
Describe the response of the community (neighbors, church members, members of the Liberian community) to Mr. Duncan’s diagnosis of Ebola. Which responses were helpful? Which responses were harmful? What could the community have done better?
7.
Describe the response of the media. Was it appropriate, helpful, or harmful? Why? How did the media reports impact the public?
Phase 2: How will this case impact your practice as a public health professional?
In the second part of your discussion board, use your analysis to reflect on how you will practice as a public health professional. Respond to these prompts.
Each member of the team should respond to all four questions:
1.
Now that you have discussed the details of the case, engage your intellectual empathy. Which member of the surviving family did you identify with the most? Imagine that you are that person. Really take a few minutes to imagine what it would be like to be quarantined, how it would affect your work and personal life, what your grief would be like, and what it would be like to be treated with fear and bias by others.
2.

1. You will also need to analyze a piece of media this week about ho.docxcroysierkathey
1. You will also need to analyze a piece of media this week about how it portrays stereotypes. Stereotypes are overgeneralizations that we have about a group of people. We might think that women are emotional--that is a stereotype. So when you analyze one piece of media you will want to think and see if you can identify a particular instance, in this case, where women are portrayed as emotional (portrayed in a stereotypical way) or a time when maybe the media shows them defying stereotypes. overall, do you think that the media contributes to the ways in which we tend to stereotype different people? Do you think that people are often portrayed in this stereotypical light?
2. Socialization is the process through which we learn the norms, values, and beliefs of our society. Norms are the rules and expectations that we follow. Socialization is very important because having a shared set of understandings helps us all get along and understand our social world. However, what we come to learn as "norm" or the rules of our society can also some lead to us stereotyping others or can contribute to inequalities. One thing you will think about this week is gender socialization. This refers to how even from a young age we are taught that certain things are for boys or for girls. How might that type of gender socialization contribute to inequalities that men and women face in society?

2. The groups represented
• Our media product represents two particular
social groups the first is the social group of
pregnant women and the second is people
who are categorized as clinically insane.
3. Pregnant women
• Our representation of pregnant females is
the main character within the house who is
being followed by the presence she is a
representation of pregnant women as she is
going about her daily business and not doing
anything to unrealistic.
4. Clinically insane
• Our media product also represents a women
who is categorized as clinically insane .this is
shown because this women's speech does not
completely make sense and also she denies
having anything wrong with her believing that
the way she is seeing things is rational.
5. • It was easy to represent the social groups as
long as we did not over do the simple roles of
a pregnant women but at the same time we
have to come up with quotes which were
cryptic in order to make the character
relatable to the social groups it belongs to.
How was this achieved ?
