Feedback of video interview with Rick
What have I learnt?
• Many of what I have learnt from the interview with rick came from the
questions whereby he gave constructive feedback on the product and
areas that it could have been improved on.
• The first thing that rick picks up on is the text on the front cover, rick
says that he cant read some of the names on the left particularly well.
This was a problem that I ran into while in the production process of my
magazine and an attempt at resolving it was made by placing drop
shadows on the text. Through this I have leant that colour coordination
is key especially on the front cover and if I where to do it again I would
either choose a new background or decide on a different colour for the
text.
• I then asked rick later on in the interview if there was anything that
would put him off the magazine. Overall rick did not suggests too much
against them magazine but did say that perhaps on the Double page
spread the text should be broken up a little bit. I believe that this is
good feedback as my target audience who are primarily more fox
thinkers than hedgehog thinkers would perhaps be put off by the large
blocks of text and smaller sections of text would appeal more.
Feedback
• Throughout many of ricks answers I was able to see a pattern
emerge whereby what attracted him most were visual
elements on the pages and what deterred him form the
magazine was often the written contents of the pages. This
suggests that my audience are as I expected and primarily
place style over content. This is also suggested when rick says
the “contents page is cool” highlighting how my audience
prize individuality over convention.
• I also learn that more about my sophisticated readers who
would enjoy getting to “know what the magazine is about” as
rick said. This interesting feedback as it shows me that my
sophisticated audience are less interested about construction
of the stars image and more about the creativity of the music.

Analysis
• This theory sees the audience as the most active and
independent. Audiences have complete independence over
what how they read a media product. I feel that my audience
would recognise and understand what the producer wants you
to do but adjust it to suit personal circumstance. I believe this
due to some of the comments that rick made about the
product for example when he complimented some of the
colour choices that I made on the contents page and double
page spread showing that he accepts some of the aims of my
colour choices such as hierarchy of text and images on page
which rick suggests when he says “the stuff that you want to
read comes out” showing how the upper class audience read
what they want to read.
Hypodermic syringe
• The working classes of my target audience will not have The
same outlook on the magazine as my upper class have. They
will instead fall under other theories such as Hypodermic
syringe and Culmination theory that see the audience as less
active. Hypodermic syringe is a theory that suggests the
audience are injected with ideologies which they blindly
accept. This theory is not shown through the interview with
rick as rick falls under the B income bracket of my audience
and therefore would view the magazine differently. By
believing that my audience will perceive the product the way
this theory suggests I can begin to analyse my magazine in a
way that the working classes of my audience would.
Dyers star theory
• Dyers star theory suggests that stars are made to look like real
people experiencing real emotions. It is said that stars are
constructed by the media for a particular purpose and that purpose.
Dyers star theory can be seen within my magazine through the way
that i have photographed Alex. Alex is seen to be experiencing real
emotions through the vulnerable look that he has. The graffiti and
casual street clothing that the two in Congi wear also represent the
stereotypical underground listener. By having the two dress like this
and also having the graffiti wall behind them makes those that read
the magazine feel as though they can associate with the two as it
increase their identity as an underground artist and the more you
are like your target audience the more you appeal to them.
• This theory is primarily associated with the working classes as they
are not as active as those in the upper classes. This is represented
through ricks response as he does not pick up on this and chooses to
ignore it which shows some of David Morley's reception analysis.
Uses and gratifications
• The uses and gratifications model is said to have to for fill one of these when we
choose a media product.

• Entertainment audience gets escapism
• Information – audience learns something
• Personal identity – the audience can relate to the characters situation
• Social interaction – the media product creates a topic of conversation with
friends
• I feel that my audience would be able to receive information, personal identity
and entertainment through my magazine. My magazine would give information
through articles about artists and different genres of the underground. This
information would also give a entertainment factor to the audience, especially if
they enjoy the genre and find it interesting. I believe that my more working class
audiences would gain personal identity with the artists and some of the picture
pages of “people of the underground” that I would have intended on creating if I
were to produce the whole magazine. I believe that Dyers star theory would
apply to the working classes of my audience and because of this they would
perhaps believe that they can associate themselves with the artist.
