Puerperium is the 6 week period following childbirth where the body returns to its pre-pregnant state. Involution of the uterus occurs through contraction and reduction in size. Lochia discharge occurs for 2 weeks. Common abnormalities include puerperal pyrexia due to infection, subinvolution if involution is impaired, and urinary complications due to bacteria. Breast complications like engorgement, cracked nipples, mastitis and failure can occur. Other issues are venous thrombosis, postpartum hemorrhage, depression and psychosis. Care involves rest, diet, antibiotics if infected, and addressing any specific complications.
