Read the details in the prompt attached below regarding the assignment and how to conduct an oral history interview. Then, do an interview with an older family member, someone of your parents’ or grandparents’ generation (or, if an older family member is not available, another older member of your community or a family friend).
Then write a typed, double-spaced, two-page essay that explores a family, community member or older family friend’s experience from their life. Note: You may write this essay in the first person, as in “On March 31, 2016, I interviewed my great-uncle J.D., who is 68.” “My family history reveals....” “I discovered that our community....”
You will share these interviews and experiences in your facilitator groups on Wednesday, September 13. Bring your essay to class that day and be prepared to share both the information shared with you about your family member and the experience you had doing the interview.
Oral History: Everyone is a primary source and all historical experience is important.
Oral history provides a fuller, more accurate picture of the past by augmenting the information provided by other primary sources. Eyewitnesses to events contribute various viewpoints and perspectives that fill in the gaps in documented history, sometimes correcting or even contradicting the written record. Remember history is an interpretation of past events and of past experiences. Interviewers are able to ask questions left out of other records and to interview people whose stories have been untold or forgotten. At times, an interview may serve as the only source of information available about a certain place, event or person. In this unit, you will interview an older family member, community member or friend about a memorable experience in their life tied to a historic event of your interest or about their experience immigrating/migrating to California or some other place in the US if applicable.
Format: Write a typed, double-spaced, two pages, 1” margins essay that explores a family, community member or older family friend’s experience from their life. History is not something that happens outside of Douglas. South Georgia also experienced the Civil War, the1920s, the Great Depression, and so on. Often, what happened in Douglas is similar to events elsewhere and a lot of that history still makes up the places we know and love today. This semester, you will research an event in local history and explain how this event connects within the larger context of US history.
Due: September 26, 2019
Purpose: The purpose of this project is for you to learn how to do primary and (scholarly) secondary research to demonstrate how local events are a part of larger historical patterns.
Skills: In completing this project, you will learn how to analyze sources carefully, draw conclusions based upon facts you have researched, and build an argument based on your findings. In doing so, you will also learn the steps to write an effective college-level research paper.
Knowledge: This assignment will let you have a deeper understanding of the importance of historical context, and a greater appreciation for the historian’s task of placing events in historical context. Most excitingly, you will see how even a tiny quiet place like Douglas or Waycross still connects to the events described in our textbook.
Tasks:
1. Pick an event that happened in Douglas or Waycross from 1865 to 2000.
Using the historic local newspapers available in Galileo is a great way to find a topic. You can do keyword searches or you can just flip through full pages until you find something. Not savvy with the computer? Fear not! The library has the local newspapers on microfilm—pick a decade that interests you and read through a few issues until you find something that interests you.
2. When you find an event that sounds interesting, read the story carefully and, noting the date, think about what was going on nationally when this event occurred.
3. Read the chapter in your textbook related to the local topic you are examining.
No, Douglas is not going to be mentioned in your textbook, but the textbook will give you the national context you need to understand what was going on in the US when your event happened. Example: perhaps your topic is about a soldier coming home to Douglas from Vietnam. Reading the chapter on the Vietnam War would be a good idea. If you’re researching when Elvis Presley came to Waycross, you would read the chapter on 1950s America.
4. Use Galileo, Google Scholar, or Google Books to locate TWO MORE reliable and scholarly sources about your topic.
These sources do not necessarily have to discuss your specific local event, but, like your textbook, should be related to the general subject and time period related to your local event.
5. Locate TWO MORE primary sources that are similar to your subject, time period, and theme.

Document Interpretation: Ultimate Skill of the HistorianPrimary Sources
Primary sources are generally first-hand accounts or records. They may have been written or created during the time period under investigation, or perhaps were written by someone who lived during that time period. Most crucially, they have not been interpreted by anyone else, though they may offer interpretations of the events they describe. Below are four examples of primary sources: a political cartoon, a page of correspondence, the title page of Thomas Paine's Common Sense, and a wartime poster encouraging women workers. As you can imagine, however, there are many more types of primary sources.
Countless items can be used by historians as primary sources. Almost anything you can imagine could be used as a primary source in some type of historical research. A fun exercise to help you understand the immensity of available primary sources is to look around the room you're in and ask yourself, "what would historians view or study one hundred years from now to understand the way we live and what we think today?"

Secondary Sources
Secondary sources analyze, interpret, or comment upon primary sources. A secondary source says something about a primary sources, often illustrating patterns of recurring themes.
Perhaps the best example of a secondary source is your textbook. Open it to any chapter and read a couple of paragraphs and you will find that the authors have conducted extensive research utilizing primary sources. They have likely consulted other secondary sources as well. They have then written those paragraphs to explain what they have learned and how they understand the people and ideas of the past. The authors have interpreted the sources for you.
