Public Charge – When is it Safe to use Public Benefits?
Use of Medi-Cal, or other health programs will NOT AFFECT the public charge decision UNLESS
you use those funds to pay for long-term care (nursing home).
Use of CalFresh (food stamps), WIC, Public Housing or other Non-cash programs, will NOT
AFFECT the public charge decision.
Use of cash welfare by your children will NOT AFFECT the public charge decision.
If your children or other family members used cash welfare (such as CalWORKs or SSI), it will
NOT COUNT AGAINST you, UNLESS it is your family’s only income.
