This document provides information on safety equipment and procedures for handling high density brines. It discusses the chemical properties of brines and their risks to skin and eyes. 1. PSC Safety Range for Handling of Brines

2. Introduction
We are a speciality oilfield safety distributor with one of the most

Chemical handling in the workplace is a challenging tasks and requires
that the work team is adequately briefed on the safety aspects and
also uses the required mandatory PPE materials for their own safety
and to prevent liabilities from injuries occurring due to non‐use of
these.

3. Brines – Exposure to skin
As a general rule, brine solutions become more irritating to the skin as the density of the
fluid is increased and/or the pH of the fluid becomes more acidic. With prolonged
exposure, CaCI2 and CaBr2 can be irritating to the skin and ZnBr2, because of its acidic
nature, can be more irritating to the skin.
If these brines are not washed off and if contaminated clothing is not removed, skin
burns can result. CaCl2 and CaBr2 should be washed off using soap and water within
several minutes, certainly no longer than ten minutes. Remember that these brines will
pull the moisture directly from the skin due to their hygroscopic properties. ZnBr2, due
to its acidic and hygroscopic nature, should be removed from the skin immediately.
Heavy brines immediately irritate the eyes, mucous membranes and any cuts or
scratches that are contaminated. As a general rule, the severity of the irritation increases
with density, i.e. from CaCI2 to CaBr2 to ZnBr2 with ZnBr2 being the most severe.

4. PPE Required
The type and amount of safety apparel to be worn will vary with the
specific task being done. However, hard hats, chemical splash goggles,
rubber gloves and rubber boots should be the minimum safety apparel
worn when working with or in the vicinity of brines.
In the following pages, we list down some of these and steps that can
help minimise any brine contact related injuries in the workplace.
These are general guidelines prepared and customers are requested to
consult their HSE teams for detail advise.

5. Chemical Splash Goggles
The chemical splash goggles are designed to seal against the skin around
both eyes and protect the wearer from splashing at almost any angle.
Glasses or safety glasses with side shields do not provide adequate
protection. Full face shields may be used in conjunction with and
secondary to goggles, but they should never be used to totally replace
goggles. Face shields offer protection from fluid splash only from a head‐
on direction. Fluid splashed from other angles can penetrate the area
between the face shield and the wearer's eyes.

6. Gloves
Chemical Resistant Gloves impermeable to brines should be used for handling
brines. These include PVC, Neoprene or Nitrile Rubber Gloves. For improved safety
longer 18” gloves are recommended. Where impact gloves are mandatory, please
consult us for a chemical resistant Impact Protection Glove.

7. Hand Creams
Hand creams containing lanolin and/or glycerine are good moisturizing creams.
These creams help prevent loss of moisture to brines when used beforehand and
help replace the oils and moisture that may have already been lost. Special barrier
creams are manufactured that may be rubbed onto the hand before the worker
starts his tour. These creams should be used only in conjunction with gloves, not
totally replace them. Pre‐work barrier creams are to be used prior to beginning the
work and hand conditioning creams are used post work to replace the lost
moisture and prevent skin irritation.

8. Foot Protection
Steel Toe Rubber Boots should be used for protection. PVC Gum Boots are
generally available locally and can be used. Leather boots will become stiff and
shrink when saturated with heavy brines. Features below from left to right are

Neoprene Boots.

9. Aprons
Rubber or plastic aprons should be worn when lifting sacks of dry salt or other
additives. These aprons protect the chest, waist and upper leg area from chemical
spills. Although they don't protect the arms and hands, they are invaluable when
one carrying 50 to 100 lb sacks has to "belly up to the bar" at mixing hoppers or
tanks. Aprons are cooler and more comfortable than full slicker suits. However,
they do not provide the protection that slicker suits do. Featured below are black

10. Slicker Suits/Coveralls
Wear slicker suits when splashing is probable, such as tripping pipe. These suits are
hot in the summertime and allow for little evaporation of moisture from the skin. Rig
foremen should allow extra time for projects to be carried out so that the crews can
work at a slower pace. Occasionally, these suits should be washed with a soap and
water solution to remove spilled salt. This is especially important for areas around
the cuffs, waist and neck. Wrap plastic tape such as duct tape or electrician's tape
around each wrist to enclose any opening between the glove and the slicker suit
sleeve. This procedure prevents brine from running into the sleeve when the hands
are held at any position.

11. Disposable Masks
Disposable dust/mist respirators are valuable when mixing dry additives
or salts. These are especially useful when adding finely ground
materials such as CaBr2 powder or when misting is prevalent. These
masks are lightweight, comfortable, NIOSH/MSHA/IS approved.

12. Eye Wash Stations

Eye wash fountains and drench showers should be installed near and easily
accessible to each area of high activity. These areas include but are not limited to
the rig floor, the shaker pits and the mud pits. Portable and permanent units are
available and emergency stations should be available in vicinity for immediate
assistance.
